Yes the NRL banked 49 million in profit last year, the AFL only banked 16 million - the AFL already had 89 million in its Future fund, and several million scattered throughout various infrastucture and reserve funds.
The NRL might have 200 million in the bank in 5 years - after all if you dont want progress you dont spend it, but sooner or later clubs come knocking for funding and infrastructure needs, players want pay rises. The AFL spends more on clubs yes, but it also spends more on development and second tier competition. It spends more on infrastructure, and it obviously spends more on expansion. It also entirely funds the AFLPA.
One code is going places, and the NRL is desperately trying to catch up in financial terms. AFL HQ makes 500+ million for the year. The NRL 314.3 million. The AFL makes more money from non broiadcast revenue than it does from broadcast revenue (267 million - 234 million), the NRL makes a paltry 90 million in comparison to its broadcast revenue of 221 million)
Clubs on the other hand are a slightly different story. There is a lot in liabilities yes, but debts themselves arent an actual problem as long as the level is sustainable, at the moment only two or three clubs have unsustainable levels of debt (Brisbane and Port, possibly the Bulldogs). If we are going to talk about debt levels, perhaps the fact that League HQ has liabilities of 123 million, as opposed to the AFLs 50 million - which is incidentally the AFLs guarantees on club lines of credit, and as such is also included in club liabilities - not to mention guaranteeing lines of credit for ANZ Stadium, various state competitions and the AFLPA.
