Blockbusters are created by a combination of big crowds and healthy TV ratings.
There is no doubt that State of Origin passes this test when the game is played in Sydney.
The AFL however have pulled big crowds more often than the NRL. It's not surprising when it has at it's disposal the best and biggest venue in the country. The MCG.
I honestly believe that it is about time that the NRL put some money into a big purpose built rugby league stadium that can hold as many people as the MCG can. This can be done and it should be done for the sake of competition. ANZ is a fine ground, but not spectator friendly for rugby league - and even in spite of this crowds still flock to both the State of Origin and the NRL Grand Final.

the NRL cant half fill sydney football stadium and it is a far better stadium then ANZ. so what is the point in spending money on a new stadium.
WA average 35k plus in a crap hole of subiaco
SA average 35k plus at a crap hole football park, now they have moved to the Adelaide oval.
even the lions average better at the GABBA than the NRL across sydney,(except south sydney) and they have been cellar dwellers for the last 10 years.
aside from the broncos the NRL cannot draw a crowd to any ground. they struggle to fill suburban grounds, ANZ rarely gets quater filled and stadium Australia struggles to get half filled. so how on earth does the NRL deserve a new stadium

Honestly, you know nothing about rl as well as AFL and AF in NZ.
What do you think the SFS is ? A prurpose built rl ground, purposely built next to the SCG
to intimidate the Sydney Swans.
The SFS is the best ground for watching rl yet it gets the crowds that it does.
AFL grounds get the big AFL crowds because they are watching AFL - as simple as that.

Actually no it wouldn't.
It's foolish to try and compare Allianz and the MCG. Allianz is a poor wet weather venue, and it's capacity is half that of the MCG. I stated that a venue was needed that matched the MCG in capacity.

Actually Allianz is only 2/5th's of the MCG - Even Edihad holds 14k more than it! Burswood when built in WA will hold 60,000 and AF will go through the roof - NRL will continue to fall unless they have purpose built stadium which are central and have easy access by road and rail - just like the MCG - even AAMI park in Melb averages more than most Sydney RL clubs - and the Snot greens in Canberra well their luck if a stray dog wonders into the stadium their crowds are so bad!

there is a history of people of turning up to AFL games because it is an exciting product. the NRL has no one turn's up because it is a shit boring product. its popularity is overstated because, it is the main game from NSW that has been built up thanks to the packers and murdoch wars
the MCG is what is is today because of the AFL's crowds and revenue it brings. its recent up grades tax payer funds was used but contracts are in place the AFL has to play so many games there, per season
etihat was built on a a heap on a consortium of private investors, with contracts for the AFL to take ownership of in 2025

a new stadium is being built in perth for Freo and eagles to play in thanks to the 40k crowds they average
so how can you justify to spend any more money on a new NRL ground. its crowds has risen 6k since 1957.

Adamj1300, it's a fool who takes a strength area as a comparison as you have done with Melbourne's suburban grounds. If you look at your history, Melbourne's suburban grounds were clustered together until St Kilda moved to Moorabbin. This is a situation that never really existed in Sydney, and couldn't because of the layout of the land. I would suggest that this is why away fans don't travel in Sydney but they did in Melbourne. Hence the larger crowds.
Now I agree that the main hold back for the NRL in Sydney is the lack of willingness to travel. Particularly for Manly, who have the worst reputation for it. But if a centrally located venue with the appropriate capacity was built and made appealling in terms of the weather - something that Etihad enjoys rather strongly - the crowds will come. It would just be a matter of getting the fans there in the early stages and treat them like kings. The AFL have done this very well and it would do the NRL a world of good in Sydney if they did the same.

You ignore that Docklands is just one stadium in the AFL.
You ignore the fact that fans prefer the MCG (unless it's raining)

Have you been to Subiaco, Westlakes, Gabba, WACA, SCG, ANZ, BIS, Showgrounds, Geelong or Tasmaia ?
The nrl built the SFS and CHOOSE to play out of ANZ.
