I agree. A truly successful sport is one that has a high amount of participation. Reliance on couch potatoes (as thugby is doing) is a one way trip to oblivion.

Not sure I agree. RL will continue to thrive in nsw and qld because it is ingrained in Australian culture, just like Aussie rules in AFL states. Basketball has had a decent rate of participation for years now yet has made few if any inroads into Australian sporting culture over the last two decades. In fact I think it was more popular at a professional level 20 years ago.

Your fantasy world doesn't count, Dave.
Should correct myself. Cricket is number 1. Soccer #2. AFL #3. I was thinking the football codes only when I said what I said before.

What amazes me with fumblefans is the blindness/tunnel vision of the mongs who follow the game.
You can argue tv ratings/crowds etc & Rep games cant be counted,Apparently test matches & SOO are not part of RL.
Same with playing numbers(even dodgy participation numbers),Rl has different levels of playing, but fumbefans wont acknowledge TOUCH FOOTY numbers(but will go into a frenzy over laughable Auskick participation numbers) ,because that destroys their argument .
Talk about the RIVER NILE.
If your game is limited to no rep games,no variations to suit people ,then that's your bad luck.

f me
is this the first time we've agreed on anything in the last 4 years ?

totally correct
no code bias at all here
playing numbers are important ..... but no indicator of a sports standing
fact
RL & the fumbles & bumbles in winter ..... nothing else of any real importance around
cricket in summer
small pockets of support for other sports during these times
but not in the same post code as the above 3

Soccer overall beats both AFL and rugby league in participation numbers in the football codes. AFL might win in it's heartland and rugby league in it's, but soccer has enough presence in both to get past them when it's all combined.

And just in case anyone jumps on my statement to 214 about AFL being number 1 in South East Queensland - that's just that area! Add the rest of the state and RL would get in front.
