Cometti: AFL must rethink tank

The AFL's determination to pursue Melbourne over 'tanking' allegations continues like a misguided missile.

Right now the strategy seems to be that in the absence of a Plan B it's best simply to try harder on Plan A.

It's a plan unlikely to work unless, like the AFL, you happen to be a judicial one-man band!

In recent days Melbourne chief executive Cameron Schwab, football manager Chris Connolly and former coach Dean Bailey were all given until the end of the month to give reason to the AFL why they should not be charged.

Yet no mention in this murky business of Jim Stynes!

Is it seriously being suggested the legendary Stynes was not a 'hands on' president?

I find the inference he was not a party to 'tanking' and that somehow he was duped by his own staff equally insulting to his memory.

Regardless, even the concept of 'tanking' is shadowy, and raises questions as to AFL oversight of coaching at all 18 clubs.

Often there's a thin line between genius and ridicule (consider something like Shane Ellen's role in the 1997 grand final).

The league should take a deep breath before getting involved in a round of finger-pointing that, who knows, could lead all the way to having a black box in the coaches box.

But as I've said before the real flaw in all of this can be found in western Sydney.

Expansion team GWS 'earned' top pick in last year's national draft.
What a orchestrated disgrace GWS have become.....

It did so by giving everybody on its list 'a go', by making umpteen changes every week and by selecting far from their most competitive side on a regular basis. =D>

You might remember they even came to Perth last season having 'rested' all their experienced players. =D>

We watched, and, dare I say, accepted that learning on the job and finding out who can play and who can't has its place in an elite sports competition. But If it does, then surely you can't have one rule for the old (Melbourne) and one rule for the new (GWS).

And unfortunately for the AFL it has its fingerprints all over GWS. It is virtually the league's baby!

I think the doubts surrounding Melbourne should be used for good. Accept that 'the glass is half dirty', forgive and forget and legislate our way out of this.

We need to dismantle a draft system that incentivises losers and guarantees outcomes for consistent losing.

At the risk of repeating myself, the AFL need look no further than the National Basketball Association in the United States.

Every club recruits young players with "potential". You give them a chance. If they work out then great, otherwise they get dropped.

Even basic concepts like this you fail to understand

you recruit a young talented player with a veiw to bringing him up to the elite level & put experience around him when he debuts ... not recruit him

The giants are a brand new team with a substantial proportion of untried players on their list. Of course theyre going to try different players out! #-o

Add to that young players with no AFL level conditioning rarely last a full AFL season without exhaustion! When that affects 50% of your list it causes an issue. Therefore they rotated their youth to keep them as fresh as possible.

Why bother commenting Dave when you have no idea?

I dunno
Ask the Titans
the Storm
the Wanderers
the Warriors

they all had debut seasons ranging from outstanding to very competitive

It can be done .... so it should have been done
& certainly if you were going to go to a place like Western Sydney

it would have been different if it had been say Tasmania .. or anywhere else in the heartland
as a side slow to get out of the blocks would have been forgiven here

but this team of pimple faced mongas ... could be the biggest mistake the VFL have ever made

there obviously are enough players in other sports to start up new clubs
except is seems .....in the VFL

again
is this a result of inefficient development programs ?

how could a club that had 2 years to get a squad together ..... come up with essentially ... nothing player wise ?
the Thuns weren't much better & if they don't make a serious move up the ladder in 2013..... well
its starting to get ugly.

They didnt come up with nothing. They came up with a number of experienced prized recruits and young talent. However there are not enough experienced decent AFL players free from contract to make a new team at once. The only real way to do it is steal players from other clubs. Why do that? You just upset other clubs. Why not wait 3-5 years for the team to develop fresh talent?

 Xman defending the AFL's development of GWS, this is pretty funny.

I'd also like to know who came up with the genius idea of calling a team Greater Western Sydney and then basing them in homebush, 15 odd ks from the swans home ground and smack bang in the middle of a complex which has been an unpopular location, event wise, since Sydney held its olympics??

And why hasnt he been shot?

And what the hell ended up happening with the tanking problem? We got another few years of investigating that one?
