Not sure what constitutes "proof" but only a couple of years ago one Richard Colless -CEO of the Swans - spoke of the lack of "latent" support for the Swans outside of their members. He was saying that the larger Sydney/NSW audience had not bought into the Swans or AFL and this was proven through the low TV ratings which have gotten lower. Additionally you have a journalist like Caroline Wilson who talks of the AFLs poor performance in Sydney/NSW. This is straight from the horses mouth if you like

In QLD this year with the addition of a second team the AFL got lower TV ratings than with one. The Suns picked up 14k in members but the Lions lost 10k

Hmm, I can help you out. GWS have already secured more members and a whopping $10 million worth of sponsorship deals. Meanwhile in the the NRL.... :(/ :(/ :(/
THE battle on the field is yet to be won but Penrith are being massacred in the fight with GWS for sponsorship dollars.

Penrith are still searching for a naming rights sponsor for the front of their jumper, a sponsor for the back and a sleeve sponsor.

They are short by about $1.35 million in sponsorship funds for next season.

Just 31km down the road in Blacktown, new AFL franchise the GWS Giants have jumper sponsorships worth a whopping $3 million - and they haven't played a game yet.

The highly aggressive GWS have roared into the Sydney market to secure overall sponsorship deals worth nearly $10 million.

ah.... the real story
GWS operate on a shoe string budget .... their on an oily rag already ..even before a goal is missed from 5m out in front
probably because the AFL over spent their budget on their other debacle .. the Thuns
&
still don't have a permanent training facility .... how haven't they found this yet ?
they have 12K make believe members
75% of these don't even come from Western Sydney

key staff are leaving the operation in droves .... they see the writing on the wall
this is going to be spectacular
& not in a good way 8-[ ... no one will want their good name sullied with this train wreck
its stink that won't ware off easily

I can't wait .......... :wink:

GWS continues to go from strength to strength with over 12k members, new stadium being constructed and a WHOPPING $10 million in sponsorship secured before a ball has been kicked.

Meanwhile NRL clubs like your own have been searching for a sponsor for the past 3 months and still can't find any inerest. Oh and to top it off, 15 of the 16 NRL clubs are broke :lol: :lol: :lol:

I have no idea how sponsorship dollars relates to people support but it seems every time the AFL fan feels the pressure of the superior TV ratings for the whole country of the NRL and the receding performance of the AFL north of the Murray they talk dollars.

In the last five years the NRL has surges in TV ratings,attendances,members and merchandising and we all know that is centred on NSW/QLD. At the same time the AFL has gone backwards in NSW/QLD so as a result the NRL is getting stronger and even more dominant

There has been no surge in attendances in the NRL.

Raiderdave, I challenged you to prove your statement. No human being can prove a negative and that's what you are trying to tell me to do. It is up to you to prove what you say.
Rugby League has a lying culture. Altering crowd figures, relying on inaccurate TV figures from regional NSW and refusing to distance itself from Leagues Clubs and obtain it's own club memberships as it relies on LC's to survive as private entities.

You said;

"the 25K in Sydney & 20K in Brisbane ?
there mainly ex pat ******** & thats the extent of support for the code in both of these places"

I demanded proof, only for you to say;

"you disprove it"

No. The onus is on you to prove what you say is true. At present you have not.

Topper with regards to the Swans given their South Melbourne history wouldn't you think that a reasonable proportion of their members would be Victorians? Given that how many of their membership might be from Victoria? Similar questions would apply to the Lions given their Fitzroy background.

Additionally aren't people from the AFL states who now live in Sydney/Brisbane the most likely to join a local AFL team?

Given Victorian AFL fans are meant to be so passionate about their teams is it a surprise that they would continue membership even when the team relocates.

A lot of assumptions there, enarelle. The reality is that at the time of the club's demise (both South Melbourne and Fitzroy) there was much angst. In the early days of the Swans in Sydney and the Lions in Brisbane there would have been very few such supporters. Remember also that in the case of Brisbane, there would have been a carry over from the Bears. Most of the Sydney membership in the 80's were Sydneysiders who loved Edelsten and the way they played. Whilst a number of those may have been lost they would have got them back when Sydney made the grand final in 1996. The whole issue is the amount of local memberships. I'm not saying there won't be any Melbourne based members of those clubs at all. You will find that all clubs have supporter bases in every capital city. But for it to be suggested that the majority of Sydney and Brisbane supporters aren't genuine locals goes against every marketing rule in the book.

Also, thos who move to Sydney are far more likely to stick with the club they followed before they arrived. The same applies to Brisbane. It's why, for instance, that Collingwood remain the most supported team in the AFL. They have strong support bases outside of Victoria.
Rugby League has a lying culture. Altering crowd figures, relying on inaccurate TV figures from regional NSW and refusing to distance itself from Leagues Clubs and obtain it's own club memberships as it relies on LC's to survive as private entities.
