I can't even recall the last time a Roy Maters article didn't mention the AFL at least once.

There is a lot of options in Sydney for sports. I agree the AFL trys to spin participation in places like Sydney to make the numbers seam more meaningful then they really are. No doubt the numbers are accurate, however a lot of the numbers are due to Auskick programs which are short courses and have a large volume of people going through them. These auskick numbers are going up by 10s of thousands every year. However the number of club players are only going up by much smaller numbers. You can spin this as a positive as the AFL has done or you can spin it as a negative as Roy Masters has done.

not sure how its a negative? Exposing kids to the sport at a young age can only be good surely

Agree. The negative spin is that the regualar club numbers are not going up much.

true, however change is slow. Getting more kids involved will only help but given they can participate at school and after school this will take away numbers from clubs. RL commentators will no doubt claim this is a drop in popularity.

What a wank this story is. The inference is that auskick and other programs have no effect at junior level . Maybe this is the case when it comes to competitive competition but auskick introduces the kids to a sport that many hardly know exists. It's about spreading awareness first the rest will follow. As far as participation in competitive leagues all sports are suffering for participation numbers kids have other shit to do. But the fact that the AFL are able to run such a popular introduction program in the middle of hostile territory is an absolute credit to them . I can assure you the NRL have nothing like this anywhere.

Nobody has mentioned the obvious shortfall in statistics and that is schools competitions.

???

Are you refering to NSW schools or more precisely Western Sydney Schools?
Because i only finished shool afew years back and there was not one school in my area that played competition AFL against other schools, because i was in western sydney the choices were Soccer of rugby league. I couldnt see School competitions making any significant inroads...

Similar to RL in Melbourne, non existent. Ive seen a bit of RU but never RL.

I think he may have meant that Auskick in schools is for kids under 12 and takes players away from local AFL clubs. If the club participation is counted only they miss participants at school.

I'm not sure how its a negative either :^o It's an outright lie. The words bullshit, dishonesty & deceit readily spring to mind. Its a clear and simple case of fudging! Typical of the AFL, just like there ratings.

Imagine if 'Myth Buster' ever done an episode on the AFL :D Why stop there? they'd get enough material for an entire Season

They did'nt come clean on the real numbers until after they used them to get what they wanted.

It's no wonder Izzy left when he did, A god fearing , clean living rightchous dude. He wouldn't be able to cope with all the deceit and treachery going on around him!

as the report commissioned by the VFL says ..
the perception is the game is growing well in NSW... the preception !!

meaning the reality is .. it is not

yet a few weeks earlier we had the VFL .... knowing full well what the report said
misrepresenting itself & its figures .... screaching like a banshee about how well its going in NSW

this is the point
the VFL cannot be trusted to do anything except spin .... manipulate ... & BS its way around the fact that after 30 years & a billion plus $$$ spent
its struggling still in NSW the ACT & QLD as well .. no doubt closer scrutiny of figures up there would reveal the same level of BS

its embarrasing for them
so they lie

no integrity ..... none !! [-X [-( [-( [-(
