Strong support for Aussie Rules in Newcastle - long history there. Regional area so they will jump on board a winner but that is a double edged sword. Canberra is the other option which could fix up the mess that is GWS - call it Canberra and GWS to change to simply West Sydney or something like that. The other option is another Adelaide Team - say a Norwood - plenty of room and support. I don't like the idea of a "Northern Team as it is too generic and broad area to cover. Aussie Rules is quite strong in the north of QLD - particularly around Cairns - but not big enough for an AFL team and widespread too.

Now that Tasmania is joining the AFL there is a lot of discussion about their name and how they cant be called the Tasmanian devils, Tazzy Devils or the Taz Devils without the permission of Disney, because they own the copyright.

This is rubbish, Disney own the copyright to the character, nothing more. Not Tasmania, Tazzy, Taz or devil, they apply to real objects, Disney did not make up any of those words (so they are not their creation) and all have been in common use well before Disney was created.

So if the AFL wanted to use the caricature of Disneys “Taz” in a logo there maybe be an issue.

But seeng the Disney cartoon looks nothing like a Tasmanian I doubt that would happen.

Devils (despite what is being reported, copyright is not an issue)
Wolves (another name for the thylacine,/tasmanian tiger is/was Tasmanian Wolf)
Bandicoots (the rare eastern barred bandicoot is common in tassy)
Potoroos (a bit close to the kangaroos)
Pademelons (a little cute kangaroo type animal, a bit like a bigger version of the quokka)
Quolls (a common and very pretty marsupial carnivore, common in tassy)
Rosellas/Parrots (the tasmanian rosella/parrot has all the colours of the state jumper, mainly green with yellow/gold, and red.) with a bit of blue.
The Whalers (maybe not, the name gets a bit of a bad wrap)
The Islanders. (Hmmm)
Wombats (tough and determined)
