The average of over 30000 a game and record memberships would suggest a good following though as you suggest.
I think in the shrinking world it is easier to spread the word re sport. However have you been to Adelaide ??? Last I saw rl is barely mentioned in the media unless it is national news etc. is there even a junior comp ? Adult comp ?

According to Wookie pet memberships dosn't count so that rules half of Swans members out already.
There is a Junior comp there is a senior and in the not to distant future there will be an NRL team there.

I lived in Adelaide for 7 years..
its like the RUGBY codes are non existant
its AFL AFL AND MORE AFL (SUMMERTIME CRICKET)
Adelaide local news lucky to have 5 seconds rugby league news.
junior comps a few planted over the city, but very little grassroots..

And if you actually absorbed some of what wookie posts you would read that pet memberships are not counted.
Re a nrl team I hope you are right. This is how they will grow the game outside of their heartland. If the AFL can put a team in western Sydney then the nrl can put one in Adelaide. They will need to put some work in though. AFL were into western Sydney years prior with such things as working with developers to put AFL grounds in their new estates ... things like that. Also learn from AFL mistakes.

Hopefully your a changed Man
welcome back.
Great can we now get this thread back on track!
So why is is the Swans can average 30plus year in year out & you tossball fans call them irrelevant and no fans, then 21k show up for a one off game & suddenly League has huge support in Adelaide
Logic of a league fan
Adelaide is an AFL town,
just like Sydney is an NRL town..
the fans that showed up to Adelaide to watch a non Adelaide game
shows there is potential in this city..
who for them really only have 1 winter sport code to follow.
Sydney yes do have a following..
but it is not as big as Swannies makes it out to be..
A once off game
You loons base support base support for a code offnone game where as the Swans average 30k plus week in week out and live in denial &. claim AFL has little to no support in Sydney
That's double any nrlol club in nsw gets
Then we listen to the usual list of but it's why they do don't
Eg rain, nrlol fans don't travel etc

Wait until the AFL put a third team in Sydney. It will happen, not for a long time, but it will happen. I would say in 20 years you will see one somewhere around Sydney, maybe Newcastle if not Sydney.

Wouldn't think Newcastle would exactly be on the AFLs rader even in 20 years.
sydneys projected population growth is expected to be over 2.5 million in that period of time so if anything another team in or just out of Sydney. On the north side of the harbour a maybe

Whereas the nrl really need a team in Perth and that just has to happen. Should have been done years ago. Again, however, they will have to do the ground work and realise that the team will be at such a hugh disadvantage that it will need a lot of ongoing support just to make it fair and viable. I think this is what the nrl have baulked at thus far ... there's a lot of work and a lot of risk ... and a lot of money to be put in. I think many in the nrl are happy to consolidate what they have. With AFL spreading and consolidating the nrl are faced with defending if you like whilst needing to grow. Problem is if they don't grow they will shrink eventually. Maybe there's some work going on we don't know of ... hope so... but this is the way to go. Perth is a must. The end goal of all this has to be another Melbourne team. When they can do that ... and I can't see it on the horizon , they will have made great inroads in expanding the game and combatting the AFL.

3rd Sydney team wouldn't be a good idea I reckon Frederick.
I think they should scrap the GWS partnership with Canberra and place a Canberra based side. The crowds for GWS in Canberra over the last couple of years have been decent, and slowly growing.
Interest in Canberra is on the rise.

Yes. I can see that also. The thing I guess if I was the AFL I would be looking at a map and where we need to consolidate growth . From the Victorian border to Act already is a big Aussie rules area so consolidating a base in Canberra would be a good move. The only issue is size. The AFL are not really interested in smaller population growth areas. Hence tassie and Canberra have been off the radar. But I can see Newcastle being an important strategic area thus surrounding Sydney whilst also growing the game there on another front. I think the AFL are happy to leave rural northern nsw and rural qld to the nrl. So maybe you may see a third team in Sydney that plays games in Newcastle. I don't think this has worked well with the giants however so may not go down that root. I think a third Sydney team would take precedence of Canberra but I think a push into Newcastle is needed.

For once in his struggling life, Crappy is right.
Newcastle is a bad idea.

Would be good if you made some comment as to why not?
But same would have been said about western Sydney. To expand and thus grow you need to go into areas where the game is small/irrelevant and where there is a decent population.

Get rid of all the small and struggling NRL sides in Sydney first.
