I think if the AFL could make it work they would in a heart beat. Problem is no one wants a player going down in soo and missing out on club games as they are seen as more inportant in AFL. Maybe if they played at season end? But it still has the issue of having at least three states feilding good sides and players from outside those states missing out.

Jealous of what - the Swans played in front of 61k just last Friday - that's more than go to SOO in Brisbane but we get that regularly. I get satisfaction from my club doing well in the main competition - I don't have to contrive a competition so fans and atmospher are interested in the game. Anyway we will have to agree to disagree because we're both not changing our position.

Gotta say i agree. Would far prefer my players playing for my club and aiming for finals than winning a state v state game with no real value from fans or players

A gimmick is bigger than any game in the fumbleball universe .

You're confused. I never said your SOO was irrelevant. It obviously means a lot to RL fans, far more than your entire NRL season.

However, for AFL fans SOO means very little as shown by previous years where it was followed in far smaller numbers than our regular season games,

It's the tribalism of state v state that drives SOO. NSW v Qld for bragging rights. Two strong states at RL. You can see the way the media get into it. The talk is about the event, not so much the sport itself.

I honestly dont care TBH. I went to the last AFL SOO at the MCG. Would rather go to my clubs game any day, and the fans around me were exactly the same. maybe if Victoria had 1 strong opposition state only the AFL would have similar state v state passion, but you cant manufacture something that just isnt there

But we also get the best playing the best from each state every week, we get the crowd and atmospher - RL doesn't have the crowd and atmospher every week that's why SOO is so important to them - it's a gimmick because they need this to fill a void in there major competition - otherwise the NRL becomes a feeder competition to the SOO competition. Either way one has to be devalued at the expense of the other.

AFL startee with soo but it died out due to players cobstantly not being available. Coaches did not want theur players playing and fans would be uoset if a player got injured or susoended. The AFL had to bring in rules to stop players faking injuries. It was big at one stage as vic played sa and wa but people lost interest. You can be sure that if the AFL could make it work they would. I am wondering why the nrl people on here think as to why it doesnt work? Serious question and do they think it would work. In nrl if thete was more ststes that could play?
