Hmmmm

1.2m in regional Victoria alone. 700k in WA. 250k in SA. And 500k in TAS.

How does that add up to a few hundred k? :(/
The image below is the Australian television market regions.
Image

1. Perth Metropolitan area
2. Adelaide Metropolitan area (including Murray Bridge)
3. Metropolitan area (including Geelong)
4. Sydney Metropolitan area (including Central Coast and Blue Mountains)
5. Brisbane Metropolitan area (including Gold Coast and southern Sunshine Coast)
Note: Geelong IS included in the melbourne figures.

Now looking at population the metro and regional figures gives us;

1. Perth metro - 1.9 Million and regionals - 500K (WA population is 2.4 Million)
2. Adelaide metro - 1.3 Million and regionals - 300K (SA population is 1.6 Million)
3. Melbourne metro - 4.4 Million and regionals - 1.7 Million (VIC population is 5.6 million and TAS population is 500K)
4. Sydney metro - 4.6 million and regionals - 3.1 million (NSW population is 7.3 million and ACT population is 400K)
5. Brisbane metro - 2.9 million and regionals - 1.7 Million (QLD population is 4.6 million)

traditional AFL states
metro - 7.6 Million
regionals - 2.5 million
1:3 ratio

traditional RL states
metro - 7.7 million
regionals - 4.8 million
2:3 ratio

NSW/QLD and VIC/WA/SA/TAS have virtually the same metro amount but NSW/QLD have almost double the regional amount (2.3 Million).
ParaEelsNRL wrote "People outside Sydney and Brisbane don't matter to Vfl fans because only a few hundred K live outside their heartland capital cities", Xman didnt agree but other than Victoria (which has 1.2 million) all the other AFL states only have a couple hundred thousand outside their capital cities so that quote is not wrong.
500 thousand regionals here, 300 thousand regionals there does not mean much when just Regional NSW has it covered over VIC, SA, WA and TAS regionals combined!
I agree with Para that regionals are often ignored by the AFL most probably due to this...

I must admit that while there were apparently 1.3 million people watching on television (including my good self) there were only 18K at the game last night. I was obviously disappointed but not really surprised at our loss 12-18. It was a good game and it was a shame that we couldn't stop the match winning try for the Broncos.

This doesn't auger well in the crowd sense for the game at Brookvale tonight.
Sorry, with only just over 600k metro viewers the total viewers for last night will barely beat 1m
Looking at the 2:3 ratio i came up with i would guess regionals to sit at least 400K.

Nice work.

If you read the TV ratings thread the regionals = 2/3rd metro ratings for the NRL, and 1/3 metro for the AFL has been accepted by all for a few seasons now. In fact I've shown it by ratings results a number of times.

I was merely disputing a claim the AFL regionals were a few hundred thousand which youve aptly shown is rubbish.

214Four, you have included Wikipedia in your sources. Don't use that again if you wouldn't mind.

Indeed I did. No one, whether it be NRL supporter or AFL supporter, should be using Wikipedia as a source.

That should be amended to "not use wiki as an accurate source especially on emotional subjects".

There is no need for any amendment.

hasnt there been alot of talk of the NRL double counting its TV ratings?
but what ever the matter it NRL still looses even when comparing all of its comps, the AFL club season still wins

Yep, all vfl matches on FTA somewhere in Australia live and on pay tv while the only live fta RL game each week is on Friday.

Apples with apples huh?

It reflects on who got the better TV deal to be honest.

And with all that in the NRL and Rugby Leagues way in Aus, we still beat or run equally most seasons in TV ratings and that's why you fumble fans are frightened. Aye cuzzy :-#

None of what you say is true my friend.

http://www.smh.com.au/rugby-league/leag ... 1o58v.html

NRL 1 Live fta game 2 delayed 5 games on Foxtel no simulcasting= 113m
Now add SOO 12m
NZ Sky for NZ 12+m
Test matches
League Nines
World club challenge

AFL 3 live 1 delayed FTA games 9 games live on simulcast 123m

You have pulled ahead on the competitions total ratings due to more live content and 1 extra game and simulcast,

If it were like for like the NRL would dominate.

Next TV deal NRL will likely have 2 extra live games + 1 extra game a week.....................lets see how you guys go then.

You AFL fans always like to leave things out to help your argument.............. :_<> :_<> :_<> :_<> :_<> :_<> :_<>

will never be headed again by any other sport in our lifetime

it is also situated as the most popular sport in NSW & QLD
