Nowadays we are required to stand back, because it gives us a better view to see reportable incidents and write down numbers - and because of safety concerns. When I started umpiring that wasn't the case and indeed I did get in there if I could and break it up. Today if I think there may be trouble I do get in between troublemakers before anything happens. But that only works at a break (quarter time, half time, three quarter time and after the game).
