NRL Round 1 vs AFL Round 1

Well well well what a fantastic first round for the NRL. Only really one game which wasnt that close/was over in the last ten mins. With most games going down to nail biting finishes. It really could barely have been a better first round for the NRL, as I predicted.

Please take a mo to perouse through the lovely slideshow I found of Round 1 highlights in the NRL. I'm very chuffed to see there was a bit of biff in round one. Fantastic to see the passion of men who are allowed to standup and take action against unsportsmanlike behaviour. In the AFL the poor players will never stand up for their mates for fear of massive suspensions. What a strange draconian ruling from the drongos down at AFL HQ.

Also please note the predictions on page one of this thread. The littlest AFL fan is thus far the furthest from reality while raiderdave appears the closest, a nice reflection I thought Stick that up the pipe and ram it up your asses cos, xman and nsw

I sit eagerly awaiting round 1 of the AFL.

Newcastle v St George Illawarra ; May be close but only because it's in Newcastle
Parramatta v Brisbane Broncos ; Broncos by a mile
Canberra v Melbourne ; Storm by ten miles
Penrith v Canterbury ; Bulldogs by a mile
North Queensland v Gold Coast Titans ; Cowboys by five miles
New Zealand v Manly ; The first genuine close one of the round
West Tigers v Cronulla ; Tigers easy
South Sydney v Sydney Roosters ; Roosters by a mile and Bunnies will miss Inglis

AFL
GWS v Sydney Swans ; Probably an easy win to the Swans but who knows?
Richmond v Carlton ; Always close
Hawthorn v Collingwood ; The Magpies have trouble with the Hawks so this will be close as well
Melbourne v Brisbane Lions ; Two strugglers and this will be close too
Gold Coast Suns v Adelaide ; Another close one
Fremantle v Geelong ; Another close one and the Dockers are my dark horse this year
North Melbourne v Essendon ; First thumping of the round the Bombers way
Western Bulldogs v West Coast Eagles ; Probably an easy win to the Eagles
Port Adelaide v St Kilda ; Second thumping of the round the Saints way

So we have
Thumpings ; AFL 2 NRL 5
Wins ; AFL 2 NRL 1
Close ; AFL 5 NRL 2

Round 1 win to the AFL is my prediction.

Could this self confessed AFL employee have been any further from the truth? Only a smidgeon!

I can honestly say that I have no idea about the NRLs round, but the AFL:
GWS v Sydney Swans ; Thumping, but interesting to see how the GWS and falou go
Richmond v Carlton ; Always interesting to see how the tigers go. Should be close.
Hawthorn v Collingwood ; A beauty. Buddies had his best preseason in years. First game for Buckley
Melbourne v Brisbane Lions ; Demons to keep maturing. How will Brisbane go with brown fit? Should be close.
Gold Coast Suns v Adelaide ; A close one on the GC
Fremantle v Geelong ; Another beauty and close
North Melbourne v Essendon ; Close, Bombers struggle against the Roos for some reason
Western Bulldogs v West Coast ; close. WB are good but WC are a decent side now
Port Adelaide v St Kilda not bad in Adelaide. they're usually hard to beat.

All in all a decent round bar the Sydney derby

the NRL won't have one thumping ......... every game will be close , all inside 10 pt margins

meanwhile they'll be 6 blow outs in the AFL

With 5 blowouts in the AFL and only one match a clear winner with 15mins to go in the nrl this chap looked to be quite close in his predictions

GWS v Sydney Swans ; A GF for GWS, Swans to pull away after half time.
Richmond v Carlton ; Always close , possible Richmond upset
Hawthorn v Collingwood ; Magpies have trouble with the Hawks so this will be close as well
Melbourne v Brisbane Lions ; Two strugglers, Lions on the improve but at the MCG
Gold Coast Suns v Adelaide ; Another close one. An idicator as to who's turned the corner.
Fremantle v Geelong ; Another close one, Fremantle at home looking good
North Melbourne v Essendon ; North tend to start season well, not clear cut IMO.
Western Bulldogs v West Coast Eagles ; WCE away from home will find it difficult.
Port Adelaide v St Kilda ; I just think PA will have a good start at home.

The first and last rounds of the season are always unpredictable.

And this little piggy did not too bad but still quite some way off the mark. All in all Raiderdave the clear winner on predicting the level of close competition in round 1 of the AFL and nrl. Well done dave ol chap. Jolly good show!

From what i am reading all over the place the AFL has a problem with blowouts and mismatches, Expanding to quickly might be a reason why.

Games between Carl and rich, and coll and hawthorn were convincing wins in the end but in contention up until the middle of the last quarter, so they were hardly blowouts.

The AFL competition is so close that just under half of the first round results were upsets, and another decided by a slim Marin after the final siren.

KE, you got it wrong, XMAN has a missing link, not the weakess link. Sandwich short of a picnic this one.

After Round 1 the side in RL that is now coming 2nd Last was leading the competition. XMAN, when the following is happening after 5 Rounds in AFL, not one week in, come and speak to us about how close your comp is, until then, stop making yourself look stupid:
- The competition favourites at the start of the season is 3rd last
- Every Side has won at least 1 game
- 13 of the 16 sides have won at least 2 games out of 5
- Last Years competition winners are coming 4th last
- The two teams with the biggest off season buys are coming Last and 2nd Last
- The side that is coming second last has beaten the side that is coming 4th
- The side coming 12th has beaten the side coming 2nd
- You have had 1 in every 10 games end in a draw at regular full time and have had to have extra time to decide a winner

Now that is an even competition
