25K at games
55K on TV

thats not plenty in anyones terminology unless you're a demented gimp... thats 1 in 60 people in Sydney
the game is quite .. unpopular .. in Sydney & thats not an unreasonable assessment at all.
I noticed you have ignored the simultaneous foxtel and FTA coverage the swans get. Therefore their ratings are close to 100k or sometimes higher.

Going by your logic the number of fans is limited to the people who watch the game on TV and attend the game. So the swans get 26k plus 100k on TV (foxtel included) per home game. That's 1 in 40 people who follow AFL.

The NRL get 400k on TV per home and away game, plus 17k average attendance. That's 1 in 12 people who follow NRL in Sydney.

So therefore there are 3.3 NRL fans for every AFL fan in Sydney. Nice logic.

Hardly a small following wouldn't you say?
45K ... on pay 8-[ .........
if its 55K on FTA ... & pay reaches only 1/3 of Sydneysiders .. then I'd say 18K to 20K on average is a fairer pay audience wouldn't you

afterall 175K was the " total " national rating for one pay game for the Swans ... metro n regional
to suggest a game that is as popular as a fart in an elevator in sydney could attract nearly a third of the national audience ... is hilarious

so we're back to about 75K on the box ... & 25K odd at the game ... a nice round 100,000 all up out of 5 Million ish who have interest in the Swans to some degree
1 in 50
appalling at best

oh & your lame attempt at working out that the NRL ( the entire code ) have just 3.3 times the number of fans in Sydney as the Swans ...
so just 330,000 all up ..needs some correcting don't you think

400K on TV ... thats either 200K per Sydney club ... or 200K for 1 & a mixture of fans of the other 7.5 sydney clubs watching the non Sydney club
remember thats an average for any NRL game ... an all Sydney games attracts more then that ..

so we have .... 200K on TV .. per club & 17K at games .... per club
217K X ... 8.5

thats 1.8 Million who are interested in League to some degree in Sydney
18 times the swans figure

K
I only replied with that ridiculous example to show how farcical your logic is. You cannot simply add the tv ratings and crowd figures together to calculate the number of fans!!

A popular game of RL will rate 450k in Sydney. To say that only fans of these two teams watch the game is insane.

Proof is when a game is shown that does not involve a team from that city. Are the ratings zero? Of course not!

Therefore a fn game of RL in Sydney will be watched by many fans of different clubs. The same group will probably watch a number of games that weekend. You cannot just add the ratings for each game and say there are that many fans.

You also cannot simply add the ratings and crowds together and say that is the total number of fans. People have more things to do in their lives than watch tv, yet still support the game and a team.

You're a very simple guy aren't you.[/quote]

my logic ? .... how else would you assertain popularity if not by people who " look" at your game in some way
how is 100K being pretty close to the total number of people who have some interest in AR in sydney ... not accurate

oh I'm a big AR fan
really ... go to games
no
8-[

ok .. watch plenty of it on TV
no
:-k
#-o

I'm a big fan though

& I can assure you the majority ... 2/3 of any game involving Sydney teams is the fans of the 2 sides ... what you think 100% of a teams fans watch every game on TV if they aren't at the game :-k

Parra V the Dogs ... 500K watching on TV ... 35K at ANZ
320K or 160 each from both clubs ... 25K home fans ... 10K away depending on who's home game it is
thats the sort of support or bigger clubs have ...
anyone who thinks there aren't at least 200K fans of varying degrees from Parramatta , Canterbury .. St George Illawarra .. or Wests Tigers fans in Sydney .... is a moron ... they don't watch every single game on TV .. or attend ... every single game they play
but they're there

our Smaller clubs maybe not this many ... 150K
but add it all up

& AR looks mighty small in the harbour city .. because it is.

6 times more regular attendees the NRL has then the Swans ..& thats growing as the Swans attendances continue to fall whilst RL crowds in Sydney grow
5 times the members .... ditto with the above , they're going through the roof ...whilst the Swans numbers continue to head south
& ... it'd be close .. but Souths would probably get em for members who live in Sydney anyway ... so no .. a myth there about the most in the members dept for sydneysiders ... & if they still hold the title .. they won't for long.

fancy that

So the entire NRL in sydney is only 6 times more popular than the swans?

The NRL have 9 teams and have been there 100 years.

I'll take that. Thanks! : D

Worth repeating in this thread.

Let's compare these figures to storm in Melbourne:

In 2011 the storm finished 3rd and had 171k attendance to H&A games plus 11.8k members

In 2011 the Melbourne AFL teams had 4.3 million attendance to H&A games plus 430k members

Therefore the Storm have 1/25th the attendance of AFL in Melbourne and 1/35th the membership.

I'd say the swans at 1/5th and 1/6th the NRL in Sydney is looking f'ing outstanding!!

Cheers Raider. You've made my day, again!

thats just crowds ... & a lot of our teams play in small suburban venues still .. changing slowly , but teams like Cronulla & Manly will always play within their areas as they are isolated geographically

TV audiences ... I mean ... at a minimum its a dozen times more popular a sport there
when the venues are full ... you go to the lounge rooms to find fans ... League has between 12 to 15 watching it .. to AR's 1 in Sydney

its not close
the Swans have had 30 years ... being the only representative of your sport .. having the place all to itself for AR fans up here
their results ... pathetic
that is all
