The problem for the AFL is that their foray north of the Murray looks more and more like the story " The Emperor has no clothes". We should not be surprised that less than 25% of the GWS members come from NSW given the similar story with the Lions and the Swans. Half of their membership is associated with the Melbourne teams they used to be and of the half that lives in NSW/QLD less than half of them are from NSW/QLD with huge numbers of AFL expats making up the numbers. So the less than 25% for GWS is consistent. Bottom line it shows that the locals have not gone for AFL or are going to. It is all confirmed by the lack of TV viewers and indeed the AFL went backwards with a new team on the block

The AFL is paying $30m a year for two new teams trying to get back to where they were 5 years but they had little option given they weren't going to expand internationally and there is an ability to see beyond club issues which killed interstate games.

How therefore do you explain the crowds to matches in Sydney and Brisbane that exceed those of most NRL club games?
