More populated, people wanting to live around the harbour and coast as close as possible to the city

Melbourne is more s spread, it doesn't have the harbour its born more land that is liveable on

Simply supply and demand. Probably same amount of land with higher population. I may just add that maybe given Sydney is a crappy it's to get around the closer and less travel will Drive inner suburban prices up ... this will form a base that declines as you head further out ... to a certain point where distance to city is not a factor. Prices will then usually determined by local factors. You have more head offices in Sydney too that pay higher wages to corporate types thus more money to spend.

TBH Melbourne isn't my most favourite city of the world or even Australia! But it's sure as hell a thousand time nicer than Sydney

You'd be surprised how many people I meet in Brisbane and Gold Coast that love Melbourne. I love the beaches and weather of the Gold and sunny coasts but do love to visit Melbourne. Food is so good. Coffee is getting better here but in Melbourne it is in another level. The culture and lane ways .. theatre... dinning .... wineries ...... I'll have to head back soon lol
