Other than SOO the NRL gets flogged. It won the GF for the first time in years and only really because of a sentimental favorite winning. The finals and home and away games were dominated in crowds and ratings by the AFL. The NRL is actively trying to grow its crowds but actually went down from a dismal 16k

LOL

FOR the second year running, the NRL has suffered a major ratings hit with TV audiences down by another 3.6 million across Australia and New Zealand in 2014.

The NRL has also failed to reach its crowd target of 16,500 for this season, recording a 15,900 average that was almost identical to last year’s attendance result.

The Daily Telegraph yesterday obtained the final TV ratings figures for the 26-round regular season, which reveal significant drops for all three official broadcasters — Channel Nine, Fox Sports, and Sky New Zealand.

So the ratings were down, and we know the crowds were down. The AFLs crowds were up and the ratings held steady

I don't know how many times it has been said on this Forum..
ratings were down, but Digital platforms are up.

the Only reason the AFL even gets close,
Is because each game is shown on FTA in there own States..
for example.

Adelaide crows v West Cast, Shown live into SA and WA then on Fox Sports for the rest of the country..
this happens with every game of AFL.

I will add the extra game you have a week as well.

You have 4 FTA min a Week on FTA into each State..
plus the rest played on FOX SPORTS MAXING the Tv viewers to the LIMIT

THE NRL has 3 FTA GAMES 2 live 1 delayed. and 5 games on fox sports.

how we even come close is amazing.!!!!!!!

if both codes were to put 8 games a week on FTA live around the country
THE NRL would win EASILY!

utter rubbish. What you dot realise is only 1 AFL game a weekend is shown in isolation (Friday night), the other 8 are all shown against another AFL game. The end result is all AFL fans can only realistically watch 5-6 games a weekend, not 9. Therefore in reality the NRL has 25 rounds of 8 games a weekend and the AFL only 22 rounds of 5-6 viewable games a weekend.

So the NRL should be well ahead but actually lose :_<>

The details are sketchy. They are top secret. They are also unfinished. But somethin's doin', as they say.

It is understood Richardson laid down a draft proposal before the ARL Commission in Brisbane on Thursday, with a more detailed plan to be handed down later in the year.

But from what I've heard there are some significant changes ahead. Some commonsense ones, too, such as a potentially shortened NRL season so there's more quality than quantity, a proper place for international footy, stand-alone Origins, a professional Nines competition to take on rugby's version of sevens, and greater emphasis on touch football at the grassroots level.

Again, it's early days, but it looms as a "whole of game" blueprint that firstly stops player burnout, stops the contract circus, increases the number of quality matches at all levels, all played at the right time for a change.

Critically, it will ensure rugby league is a game for all.

Sounds like nirvana, yes? It also sounds like an unrealistic pipedream given the agendas and self-interest that rip at the fabric of the game every day.

But you can bet NRL chief executive Dave Smith is banking on it to help deliver a potential $2 billion-plus broadcast and digital rights deal.

News broke last week that Smith had started negotiations with interested parties. The current $1.2 billion rights deal ends in 2017.

In reality, he has been talking to the likes of Lachlan Murdoch and James Packer from Ten, representatives of Seven boss Kerry Stokes and Nine chief executive David Gyngell for months."

the AFL season is far too important to risk player injury on meaningless exhibition games

They could always do a city vs country instead of that hybrid abortion.

Yeah not much you can do with a sport that is only really popular at the bottom half of a nation and nowhere else.

the NRL is locked in 2 Australian states, but this is the perfect recipe for a traditional rivalry because there can only be this matchup. The AFLs issue is its popular in 4 states and has a number of stars from the other 2. Therefore there is no traditional rival

NRL locked in two states??

So I suppose the Auckland Warriors, Canberra Raiders and Melbourne Storm are in NSW or Qld are they?? =D> =D>

There are plenty of English, Fijian and New Zealand players that are NRL stars and are ineligible to play Origin.. So that arguement does not really add up.

I was talking about Australia in the context of comments claiming AFL is in southern states only.
