Former AFL Brisbane Lions player Albert Proud charged with attempted murder

Former Brisbane Lions AFL footballer Albert Proud is remanded in custody, charged with the attempted murder of his girlfriend.
Former Lions footballer Albert Proud has been remanded in custody, charged with the attempted murder of his girlfriend.
Proud, 27, has also been charged with grievous bodily harm, one act of intent to cause grievous bodily harm causing a person to contract a grievous bodily disease, and wilful damage.
Proud appeared at Richlands Magistrates Court, where he was remanded.
It was alleged, about 2am Sunday morning Proud assaulted a 35-year-old-woman, causing severe facial and head injuries at a residence in Sunnybank.
Passers-by saw the woman on the street and transported her to the hospital Queen Elizabeth II Hospital.
The woman is in a serious but stable condition.
Albert Proud is set to reappear on November 19 at the Holland Park Magistrates Court.
Proud played just 29 games for the Lions after being drafted at pick 22 in the 2006 draft.
He was delisted by the Lions at the end of 2010 after an inauspicious career for a player taken so high in the draft.
He battled alcohol problems throughout his AFL career and in 2010 took leave from the club and admitted himself to a psychiatric clinic to attempt to deal with his problem with alcohol.
"I am not an alcoholic as in every day I need it, but when I do drink I don't stop and a lot of bad decisions have come from that," Proud said in 2010.
The Lions re-drafted the tough midfielder as a rookie after cutting him from their primary list but he was sacked by the club in 2011 for misbehaviour.
Proud was just 22 when he was sacked by the Lions and his AFL career ended for what the club said at the time was his failure "to meet the expectations and behavioural standards of an AFL player".

Brisbane Lion player Lewis Taylor admits car yard vandalism spree causing $10k damage
December 10, 2015 1:55pm
Staff writersHerald Sun.
BRISBANE Lions young gun Lewis Taylor has escaped conviction after confessing to a $10,000 vandalism spree at a car yard in country Victoria.
Taylor, 20, the 2014 AFL Rising Star winner, appeared this morning along with childhood mate Geordie Scott Erwin, 20, at the Warrnambool Magistrates’s Court.
The pair entered the car yard in Mortlake, 220km west of Melbourne, just after 10pm on October 22 last year and began smashing windscreens with a seatbelt buckle.
They heard they thought they were in a junkyard and not damaging valued property.
There was a scrap metal yard next door.
Eight vehicles were damaged including a garbage truck and four tip trucks.
The court was provided with references for Taylor written by Lions’ coach Justin Leppitsch, his former headmaster and his manager.
He was charged with causing criminal damage and two counts of theft.
Under the court diversion program, defendants can admit their offending without receiving a criminal record.
Each has agreed to pay more than $5000 each towards the damage, although the car yard owner has claimed that the true cost to his business may be much greater.
The pair also agreed to pay $500 each to the SES and be of good behaviour for 12 months.
Brisbane earlier confirmed they would not take further action against Taylor.

Former AFL recruit Dayle Garlett seeks to quash prison sentence for drug-fuelled crime spree
Western Australia's Court of Appeal has been asked to quash the prison sentence given to former AFL recruit Dayle Garlett so he can resurrect his career.
Garlett, 22, who was recruited by Hawthorn in 2013, is serving a four-year-and-eight-month jail term, imposed last September, for a drug-fuelled crime spree.
Today his lawyer George Giudice argued his client should have received a suspended sentence, saying the jail term was "manifestly excessive" and "crushing".
Mr Giudice said his client was "a young man who went off the rails in a short period of time" and he should given the benefit of a non-custodial sentence.
He said the jail term risked "snuffing out" any prospect Garlett might have "to take advantage of his talent" as a footballer.
Mr Giudice said there was only a "small window of opportunity" for his client, whom he said had "a very promising career prospect".
"He is worth another chance and he's a good bet to succeed," he said.
Crimes committed to pay for drugs
Garlett left Hawthorn in March 2014 citing homesickness and an inability to meet the demands of being an AFL player.
He became addicted to drugs to and a previous court hearing was told his crimes were committed largely to fund his habit.
The footballer pleaded guilty to 14 charges including home burglary, car theft, driving more than 45 kilometres over the speed limit and driving recklessly to avoid police.
The spree started in November 2014, just eight days after Garlett was placed on an intensive supervision order for three earlier offences of burglary, stealing and receiving stolen property.
In February last year, he was given another chance and placed on a second intensive supervision order for stealing a car and petrol, but seven days later he committed a burglary.
Another of his offences was stealing a pair of trousers to wear to court because he said he wanted show respect for the magistrate.
"That shows how he was not in a good place," Mr Giudice said, adding that he should be given a chance to rehabilitate himself in the community.
The Appeal Court reserved its decision.

Re: The Crime and Punishment Files
WTF is happening in RL? We've all heard of Hopoate and his digital rape of an opponent during a match and then Mitchell Pearces beastiality incident - now Josh Reynolds can't resist temptation and has to go the grope during a match while he's opponent is feeding a scrum - like can't he wait at least til after the match to try and get his telephone number? And you blokes call our sport gayfl, yet your players it seems can't keep their hands off other players!
