exactly, participation doesnt = popularity in every case. grass roots is definitely important, but i know tonnes of soccer players than follow league over soccer. dont know any league players that follow soccer, and barely know any union players that follow union.

personally i've never played competitive league, only union and touch footy. doesn't mean i dont go to games, watch games or lend my support to my team.

Forced participation (by schools) is very misleading.Yet the Fumbleball cultists gleefully lap up the numbers as if it means that their game is popular.

That report is spot on .there is a lot of bullshit & fudging to cover the REAL picture.

Please provide proof - the AFL doesn't tell people they offer "an AFL experience" like rugby league and somehow try to make it into participation - you have to register for Auskick AND pay money - nor does it need to merge with a completely different game to increase its participation like rugby league! No folks for the best fudges in the world just look at the N R L!

In the chase for participant numbers in NSW and ACT, a shortened and often subsidised version of Auskick has been aggressively rolled out in primary schools (In-School Auskick) and after-school centres (Community Auskick). The In-School participants have rarely elected to join an Auskick program. Their school has chosen to include an Auskick program.
Junior club feedback has indicated that the In-School and Community versions have, at times, harmed Club Auskick. Consequently, the longer term retention of entry


1. Western Sydney – The Reality versus Perception Gap
The reality is that junior club maturity and participation numbers appear to have stalled. There are 6% less junior/youth players in 2012 than in 2009. The perception, however, is that the game is growing well. This perception is supported by masking low junior club numbers with Auskick numbers (Club, School and Community Auskick) and school program numbers. This optimistic, bullish perception is needed to market the game, however this perception urgently needs to be underpinned by committed junior club participants.
b. Retention above U14
The greatest „retention cliff‟ in GSJ football occurs from U14 to U15 age groups (-27%; 706 to 515 players in Greater Sydney).

AFL counts them as participants.
Outside school most kids have no interest in AFL.

if he had no other interest in the game & would never sign up as a registered player ,do you think he should be counted as a rl junior.
