You haven't proved it. I played league in canberra, I live in canberra. The only way the AFL has a chance of harming rugby league/union territory of canberra is to establish an AFL team. Until that day, the rugby codes are still at the top.
That isn't proof? AFL is winning in Canberra and you haven't got the groovy goolies to admit it. Whether or not there's a Canberra team in the AFL is immaterial. If there was it would go from a win to a fricking slaughter!

Are we talking about junior or first grade comp? Either way, you're going about how there are more AF teams in canberra, like some proof matey?

I'm talking about both! It's all there.
Senior Clubs - AFL: 10 - Rugby League: 6 (including the Raiders)
Junior Clubs - AFL: 11 - Rugy League: 9
Surely you aren't THAT ignorant towards the obvious difference!

Okay I'm going to barge in on this one, Jacky Boy, because you don't know Canberra very well for someone who lives there. I lived there for a little over two years and I can tell you that the AFL grounds are looked after a whole lot better than the thugby grounds! Aside from Manuka, Ainslie and Tuggeranong are magnificent venues. What does the district thugby comp have? Northbourne Oval? I've seen that from the bus and it is a HOLE! Phillip District Ovals? Even worse! Tuggeranong's thugby ground is next to the football oval IIRC, and I can tell you which facilities are better! I don't know what the West Belconnen Leagues Club is like but judging by the others it would have been poorly kept as well!
So what's the pecking order again?
Get out and look at what's really going on, Jacky, because right now you don't have a clue. Canberra has been an AFL town for a long time and you only have to look at how the Raiders are struggling and how the Brumbies only pull big crowds when they are winning to see that I'm right. What was the crowd at the 2010 district league grand final and where was it played? Bet it was played in Queanbeyan, in NEW SOUTH WALES! Bet also that the crowd at the AFL Canberra GF at Manuka was bigger!
Needed to be said.

Dementedave is always telling us that rl is Canberra's #1 sport, even though participation numbers and crowds show that union is 1st. If Canberra ever got an AFL team that could spell the end for the Raiders. Heck, even when the Giants become good and start selling out Manuka I'd be worried for league in the capital.

Where's the proof? And even if there are more teams, doesn't mean that that's the most popular code. Maybe a better figure to talk about with this thread is participation?

AFL teams require more players than RL too

Does it really matter ? Fact is AFL is expanding its reach and whilst the Barassi line gives a rough indicator of the boundary it is true to say AFL has a much higher presence over that line then it did 30 years ago. Part of that reason is to do with the nationalization of the tv media ... Where we get news for the whole country. For an AFL game to regularly get 25 to 30 on Sydney is amazing really. For storm to get 16000 average is also pretty good.
The fact is pretty much the AFL is going from strength to strength. They have their issues no doubt and not all glowing but generally the direction. Is positive.
The nrl are indeed struggling. Their main strength is that it is the most popular code in Australia's biggest city. Everywhere I read the nrl fans openly discuss the difficulties the game is experiencing. Except on here where eligah and Dave, for there own differing reasons, say it is going great and is bigger than AFL etc ... But the general consensus of nrl fans is that the game is in trouble.

Participation creates clubs! The more clubs the more participation! Add to that was Xman said about more players to a team. And TLPG (wow he posted here?) made a great point about the grounds and it doesn't fricking matter who owns the ground because the government owns ALL OF THEM!!! Except maybe Bruce Stadium.

TV ratings alone put the Vfl last in Canberra, it's embarrassing for prime to have to show the game
They've had a few articles about the poor showing over the years in the ACT, yet a bunch of loons here think it's the biggest game in town since Jesus was a lad.
Too bloody funny.
Oh, and the Brumbies according to a few newspaper articles a year or so back had them as the lowest ratings pro (mens) team in Australia on Pay TV, yet they're bigger than the Raiders too according to said loons above
