A nice historical evaluation there Dave. Can you tell us why there was a large migration there from victoria 30 years ago?
It's very true what happens to the children of migrants. After several generations the ways of their elders become less significant that the environment in which they grow up in. Perhaps these third gens barely know the lions exist.

Its a well known fact that Paddle Pop Wions fans of today are mainly old retired ex pat Vics & their siblings & part of the moth ball brigade
who migrated to SE Qld up to 30 years ago. All of the originals are now retired & their kids .. all adults now too.. they are a very old crowd at the Wions.
No kids .. or very few these days.
the older sthn immigrants held onto their facination for singlets & fumbling ... the next generation a bit less .... the next a bit less again as far superior alternatives were all around them in the sunshine state.
with other supporters
As is the case in Sydney ..the Natives never really paid much attention to the sthn game.
as the retirees die off & the generations following aren't as obsessed with tight shorts , plus the mass migration of sthners has all but ceased
the Victorian game will have some bleak decades to come in SE Qld
very bleak indeed

So this generational change must have happened in what, 3 years? You only need to go back then to see what the Lions were averaging when they were having a good season. This is how quickly the Queensland bandwagoner sports fans jump off if you aren't performing. Same will happen to the Broncos if they bottom out for a few years. Once the Lions start making the finals again, their crowds will be right back up at the 30k mark.

Why did the Lions average higher crowds than the Broncos during some years in the 2000's then? Why do the Reds average higher crowds than the Broncos now? It's because Queensland sports fans are bandwagoners and rotate their support for whatever team's winning.

Because RL had not long finished a bitter SL war and the fact they were playing games at ANZ stadium for those years which the supporters hated should tell you that.
Their crowds dropped from over 43,000 average to 19k in a few years yet they were winning still.

The SL finished in 1998 yeah? Well over by the 2000's.

SL war was going on well after 1998, ffs there were still teams being merged and kicked out after 2000.
Do you actually know anything about RL, I know I've asked this of you before, but I can't remember you answering.

A little research shows that the SL finished in 1997. I was wrong by 1 year and I apologise.

The SL war only really finished this year when the ARLC got in and they kicked News Limited and its puppet out with them.
There has been warring factions in the NRL system since they got together.

the war ended officially at the end of 1997 , the NRL was formed in 1998
the effects of the war were ongoing right up til 2012 , with News being shown the door the final act although some say the removal of Gallop was the final act in the peace agreement & the hatchet finally burried .
it took our game 15 years to shake off the affect of this bitter civil conflict.
we're really only now getting on with it

That's how it more or less is.
Yeah I was wrong, it was 97 stewie, my team finally started putting it together, we were pretty bad from 1990 till 1996 when we finished in 13th (our best year in that period). 1997 we came third, our best in over a decade, but it was only a 12 team comp at the time because the SL were running their own comp. At the end of the season they announced the formation of the NRL partnership, and that's when all the mergers/relegations/un-merged/death/promotions and whatnot started. Seems to have hopefully finished this year with a new and independent direction being the main thing.
