They get paid in cash, and no other way. If you choose not to believe me it's your loss. Tell me; would you play a competitive sport for free when getting injured could cost you sick leave in your place of work?

there'd need to be organised club competitions for them to be paid .... that'd be enough proof for me

All the competitions linked through the Wikipedia article are organised club competitions for premiership points and premiership cups.

What about the clubs? THEY pay the players, not the NZAFL!

There are many examples across business of a chief body up the creek but local parts doing very well.

It is. The league could not function with it and the clubs in debt in a non heartland region.

The league is continuing to function, contrary to your ridiculous assertion. It could only do so if the clubs were running a profit and they are.
