From the AFLs own numbers is the fact that their "stunning" expansion costs them in the order of $30m pr annum.

By the time they finish the negotiations the NRL will get at least the same dollars per team as the AFL without the cost of expansion.

You do realise the AFL have been saving a futures fund for many years prior to expansion? They did the research. They have more tha enough funds to last them 20 yrs or more. Sorry to dissapoint.

Glad to hear they saved the money to spend on their folly. However, it has nothing to do with the great result the NRL achieved without wasting/spending more money.

expansion costs money. The storm are a huge money pit. The Swans and Lions are self sufficient.

Imagine if 30 years ago the VFL said "why expand? it costs money!"

Its a bold move but the AFL have the funds plus some. Remember they earn more than double the NRL in sponsorship, gate receipts and membership.

They more than double the NRL in costs also eg more teams, more players, higher salary cap an significantly higher ground hire costs.. The AFL expanded north of the Murray because they needed to get to where the greatest population and dollars are. These were the words of Andrew Demetriou. The NRL is already there and its dominance is shown by the dollars.

The vast majority of Australias people live in cities. The AFL have at least 2 teams in each of the 5 largest cities. The NRL in only the 3 largest, which includes only 1 in Melbourne.

Both codes will benefit from expanding. The AFL are far closer to succesful nation-wide expansion than the NRL.

As far as cost go, yes the AFL have higher overheads. But the vast majority of our teams spend what they want. There are a few that struggle to keep up to these levels but even these have greater turnovers than just about every NRL team. All but one NRL team is losing money so a lot of your cash will be used to catch up.

The majority of Australians live in NSW/QLD/ACT. The NRL expanded by not only going to the nations capital, a multitude of regional locations in NSW/QLD (the population density allows it),the second biggest Australian city, and to a different country which is bigger than SA/WA combined. The AFL crew only think in terms in expansion in what they have done or can actually do.

Of course the AFL has had an advantage ever since the super league war. That advantage just finished.

The cities of SYD Mel/geel BRIS/gc Perth and Adel have a combine total of 14.5 million. NSW and Qld total 12.5M and there are plenty of regional areas that don't have NRL teams so they probably cover far less than that.

NSW/QLD/ACT is still only 55% of the population. to dismiss the other 45% is as bad as some AFL supporter when they dismiss the massive populations of rural NSW/Qld. I really like the way the NRL expanded into NZ it was a great long term move. However 1 NZ team does not equal 4 AFL teams in WA/SA or 4 teams in Sydney/SE Qld.
I still think the AFL has a big financial advantage. Certainly the NRL has closed the gap with a great financial deal but to say that the advantage that AFL has had financially suddenly vanished I think is a little premature. The AFL is about 6 months into a new deal, while the NRL still has to put up with 6 more months on an oily rag. For the last 10 years the AFL has had a future fund with mostly profitable years, while the NRL may even have to pay off some club debt and maybe even some league debt before they can move into the black.

What the Hell,

VIC,WA, SA,TAS = AFL = 8mill max.

NSW, QLD, NZ, PNG, = RL = 23million

wow!

Australia have a population of 23 M. Are you telling me 15M live in NSW and QLD?

Mel Perth Adel are 8M alone. Add 500k from Tas, 1.6 from Vic reg, 700k from Reg WA and 250K from SA reg and you have 11M. This leaves 12M for NSW QLD.

This was a discussion about Australia, but Since when do all of NZ follow RL? Theyve got 1 team that struggles to get 15k attendance. PNG??????

What the hell are you on??

Your adminstration sold out the fans by ensuring Broncos are on just about every Friday night for the next 5 years and the fans are now expected to attend Sunday night games on top of the already unpopular Monday night offering. Well done... something to be proud of.

Let us deal with this nonsense that the reason that all AFL games are shown live on Foxtel has something to do with the generous spirit of the AFL to their supporters. Of course this is nonsense as it was driven by pure financial need/desire. Foxtel wants to drive up subscribers in the AFL states and saw the AFL as an opportunity and significantly increased their offer -the AFL said it is all yours at that price. This strategy has not worked - Foxtel has only an additional 20k in subscribers. So the great AFL loving community will not pay the price to see all the games.

How can you idiots think your in front.Less money.one game live on free to air and no simulcast. If the AFL commision had made this deal theyd be sacked.Imagine one game of live footy a week and you idiots are happy.Do you think the AFL could possibly imagine showing three live games into sydney while league only has one. This would be beyond their wildest dreams. The AFL took a shit load less so the fans got the best deal fact.League sold every last bastion of family friendly footy and still come up over 100 million in cash short. If you had any brains youd be on their door step.
