The NRL put simply doesn't deliver the national appeal that the AFL does week after week, season after season. We all know the AFL is stronger in its non heartland areas than the NRL is in its non heartland areas. Oh and same goes for the codes in their heartlands. Just look at the AFL Grand Final ratings in Melbourne compared to the NRL Grand Final ratings in Sydney. Smashed again throwball fans. :<>

A hands-down ratings win to the AFL over the NRL at the weekend, thanks to a bigger metro audience, especially in the AFL heartland of Melbourne. While the AFL grand final’s national audience for the Collingwood-Geelong match was slightly better than last year, the NRL grand final’s average was the lowest for 11 years as Manly held off the New Zealand Warriors.
The AFL grand final, won by Geelong, had a national audience of 3.525 million based on preliminary figures. Using Ten’s adjusted metro figure of 2.630 million, the match had a national audience of 3.560 million, compared with an average for the first GF and rematch last year of 3.456 million. The NRL grand final had a national audience of 3.177 million viewers, down on the 3.324 million in 2010. Here’s the AFL audience breakdown:
•Melbourne — 1.380 million
•Perth — 368,000
•Brisbane — 320,000
•Adelaide — 301,000
•Sydney — 262,000
•Regional audience — 788,000
Here’s the NRL audience breakdown:
•Sydney — 1.021 million
•Brisbane — 524,000

The 2011 AFL Grand Final was Australia's highest-ratings TV sports program of 2011.
The 2011 Toyota AFL Grand Final between Collingwood and Geelong attracted a national average audience of more than 3.5 million viewers, making it the highest rating TV sports program of 2011.
In an AFL media statement today, AFL Chief Operating Officer Gillon McLachlan said the combined audience on Network Ten across metropolitan and regional areas was 3,524,362, including more than 1.7 million viewers in Victoria.
This compared to a total national average audience of 3,176,892 viewers who watched Sunday’s NRL Grand final, including just under 1.7 million viewers in NSW.
As well as being the highest rating sports program so far in 2011, the 2011 Toyota AFL Grand Final was also the fifth highest rating TV program for the year.
“This is another outstanding result in the game’s heartland but also across New South Wales and Queensland where the average national audience was more than one million viewers,â€

the NRL's only team in AFL heartland continues to grow & the 2nd one in a few years ( the reds ) will be a smashing success
the AFL's Grand Final ratings in Melbourne were down 100K on last year with again 2 Victorian sides playing .. the same as last year

the NRL's in Sydney , despite only having 1 Sydney team playing & an unpopular one at that , nearly matched 2010's ratings with 2 Sydney Sides playing

More than 3.3million Australian based viewers and a further 692,000 New Zealand based fans joined the 81,988 crowd at ANZ Stadium to watch Manly’s 24-10 win over the Warriors in the 2011 Telstra Premiership Grand Final.
Across the Nine, WIN and NBN networks last evening, the Telstra Premiership Grand Final averaged 2.16million viewers in Australia’s five capital cities (2010: 2.161m) and a further 1.15m (2010: 1.151m) across regional Australia.
Sydney led the way with 1,083,000 viewers (a 75% audience share) and Brisbane 567,000 (71% audience share).
Melbourne recorded a significant lift on 2010 winning its timeslot with 362,000 viewers tuning in to see if the Warriors could go all the way after having defeated the Storm the previous week.
In New Zealand 515,000 viewers watched on subscription television live through Sky Television and a further 177,000 watched delayed free to air coverage on Prime.
