What are you talking about Storm all the time schedule their games so its straight after an AFL game and if you show your AFL ticket to the G you get in for free - The Storm are doing well no doubt about that - and if you look back further you will see they were getting 20k crowds BUT that in Melb it is only an average crowd nothing to write home about - remember Melb Vic get 40+ crowds regularly and have 40k members - so it's not about code wars in Melb and believe it or not no one deliberately goes about bagging the NRL - in fact as I have states many times AFL shows no animosity towards the Storm like the NRL and its fans have and do show towards the Swans and GWS - SEN is the AFL's own radio station in Melb - it has a Storm hour and regularly has players in for interviews, try getting that with AFL in Syd - instead we get this repetitive garbage that RD, Eels and Parra spew forth criticising every aspect of AFL and AF. Jackyboy you sound as thou you may have half a brain - please don't turn into utter filth like those three - they are cowards who can't admit when their wrong and hide behind their anonymity! No one really hates NRL but we just get sick of hearing how shit AFL is from morons who are pissed off that their game outside of NSW and QLD does not hold the same position as it does with them and their brain dead friends! Anyway I hope this clears up the perspective of the AFL fans on this forum.
I'm much more sensible then most don't worry mate! But I still don't take bollocks
True, nor should you - Storm as I said are doing well - no doubt Swans had a head start - however I don't think the Storm ever faced the outright hostility from AFL as the Swans faced from the NRL and still do! In that aspect alot of the RL posters display their clear resentment of AFL because thats what the NRL want - me I would think it boring if I lived in a country where only one sport is played like some soccer only countries - maybe thats why this country is so great!
I don't agree with the hostility! I think all sports should be strong everywhere! Obviously NRL would still be more popular In Sydney and vice Versa in Melbourne. What I don't like is when the AFL collide with NRL games constantly ( giants in canberra would be an example) but its all for the money, ey?

Agreed they are businesses - I would like it if we could appreciate each others sports strengths rather than always the negatives! No dispute RL is the main code in NSW and QLD and AF is main code in WA SA VIC and TAS - NT its a draw

Hard to seperate the ACT as seperate from NSW but I take your point - Jack in relation to hostility I recall playing AF in Sydney as a kid and the constant criticism of AFL and those that play it was on a daily basis - remember Wayne Pearce was coaching the Swans in tackling when the then NSWRL found out about it they said if anyone assisted Swans they would be run out of the game and the likes of John Laws, Rex Mossop, Ron Casey etc etc constantly have made negative comments about the Swans, the Newspapers in Syd constantly try to undermine them with the likes Roy Masters and Phil Rothfield etc etc - in Melb the Storm train with Carlton and you regularly see AFL players at their game they have good coverage by print and tv and no one really try's to undermine them and on the whole take pride in them - IMO its more of a Sydney thing to hate and try to destroy what they don't know!

I went to Melbourne recently ok? When I first got down, AFL fields everywhere. The next day I was around the CBD and found several people wearing NRL gear, mainly Sydney teams. Later on, I watched the essendon vs hawthorn game as a memento to see what Melbourne Is so crazy about. Pretty good crowd with a few rl supporters in the stand too. I caught the tram, and some women and a guy were discussing who they support. I butted in, asking does anyone know who I support? One lady answered "Collingwood darl"? I said no no I supported the raiders! (I was wearing my raiders jersey at the time). She said who are the raiders? I said they played rugby league and they are from canberra. Rugby league? I was shocked. But there is a good NRL shop in Richmond with no sight of AFL (probably established for NSW and QLD migrants

When I was there you'd get a lot of storm tops and indeed I have several friends who are big storm fans and most people I know have an interest in the storm. There isn't the hatred of rl as there once was that you see of the AFL from the likes of Dave etc toward AFL. I occasionally saw other team tops also of rl but very very rarely. And I don't think I ever saw someone playing with a rl ball ... Maybe once I think?? And indeed I have never seen a local junior comp running around lol. Compare that to the Gold Coast where you have a very large local junior comp and where AFL grounds are dotted everywhere and you see lots of shops selling both nrl and AFL gear.

Sell storm gear at Rebel sports - more RU grounds than RL. Have some big RU clubs - Box Hill being one and a very tightly linked to the private schools. Like most places you have to be in the know - The Swan Hotel is the place on game day and you can see them before the game

Were as in Sydney you have a pretty decent league for AFL, well 5 leagues I think. However I would imagine that AFL still has a niche market compared to nrl. Same in Brisbane it seems. Gold Coast has a lot more interest, especially with suns on the rise. But believe me, as soon as the suns start looking like going backwards watch the town turn. The one thing going in their favour is the atmosphere of the game... People who go tend to love the atmosphere and the game day experience and get hooked, so they need to make hay whilst the sun shines for when the cycle returns to being not so good a team.

I would say ru has a larger following overall but still very niche market. Mainly the private schools for kids that can't get a go at AFL
