WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU PUT A NEW TEAM IN A AREA WITH GRASSROOTS ALREADY FLOURISHING?

STUNNED Brisbane coach Rado Vidosic conceded the Roar were lucky to only lose 1-0 to Western Sydney Wanderers, who caused arguably the biggest boilover in A-League history tonight.

Without a goal, let alone a win, heading into the Suncorp Stadium contest against the team widely regarded as the best since the competition's inception in 2005, the Wanderers out-committed and out-enthused the sluggish and complacent Roar.

Journeyman striker Mark Bridge created history in the 19th minute when he scored the Wanderers' first A-League goal.

Having gone 288 minutes without scoring, the A-League newcomers finally found the back of the net when former Newcastle Jets and Sydney FC attacker Bridge got in front of Brisbane fullback Jack Hingert to head home a precise cross from Youssouf Hersi.

It was a well-deserved lead for the Wanderers, who dominated from the outset in bustling the Roar, who before the game were the shortest-priced favourites in A-League history, out of a contest played in front of 12,663 fans.

"They should have punished us with a few more goals,'' admitted Vidosic, who was at a loss to explain the Roar's woeful display.

"I don't know if it was a little bit of fatigue or complacency. We need to have a good look at the video and talk to the players and find out.''

Vidosic was reluctant to find excuses, but said the Roar's recent schedule, which has included trips to Perth and Wellington, might have taken its toll, despite encouraging signs on the training paddock before the upset.

Wanderers coach Tony Popovic felt the historic victory was coming despite his side's failure to score in their opening three games of the season.

"The stats don't lie, we hadn't scored, but there was no lack of confidence in this group,'' the proud Popovic said.

"We haven't dwelled on the situation. We came here with a belief we could win the game if we played well, and in the end we did that.

"At no stage did we doubt ourselves before the match. It would have been an injustice really if we didn't come away with those three points.''

The visitors could not have come closer to scoring in just the fourth minute when key midfielder Aaron Mooy unleashd with a long-strike that amazingly hit both posts but failed to cross the goal-line.

The out-of-sorts Roar had few chances during the contest but did enough to create two genuine opportunities in the first half, which Ben Halloran and Mitch Nichols failed to convert.

However, the Roar did little else as they slumped to their second defeat in four matches this season.

They have been joined on four points by the Wanderers, whose best result before the win was their first-round 0-0 draw with Central Coast Mariners.

Among the Wanderers' best last night was former Sydney FC youngster Joey Gibbs, whose only other A-League appearance was in the Sky Blues' grand final triumph in 2010.

Gibbs, who came into the side for the injured Dino Kresinger, and linked superbly with Japanse star Shinji Ono, who was excellent before coming off with 20 minutes left.

Not sure why this is funny. A league smashes RL in Melbourne, and the storm are Melbournes own team, and champions. Now that's funny.

THEY had 28 months less to prepare than their AFL counterparts but Western Sydney Wanderers have proved four games in that they won't be the A-League easybeats as the GWS Giants were.

Melbourne Heart, the A-League's second newest franchise, travels to Parramatta Stadium tonight as $2.65 underdogs according to TAB and they concede the odds reflect the new boys' sudden impact.

While the Giants were often mauled by the powerhouse sides, such as the 120-point drubbing to Collingwood in Round 18 and its average losing margin was 78 points, the Wanderers outfoxed two-time A-League champions Brisbane Roar last week to silence the many critics who tipped them to finish last.

"Western Sydney are an excellent team, it's not like playing GWS Giants or Goal Coast (in the AFL)," Heart's football operations manager John Didulica said.

"You're playing a team as good and competitive as any in the A-League

"You need to travel to west Sydney with the same mentality as though you're facing Perth or Brisbane away, they're an excellent team.

"The difference is that football has a bigger pool of players to choose from than AFL, there is lots of Australians playing overseas, Western Sydney has six foreigners (they've been handed an exemption for extra visa spots).

"It's a free market and there is a massive participation base is world football so it's easier to competitive from day one.''

Left-sided player Sam Mitchinson, 20, has been rewarded for an impressive fortnight with the youth squad and has travelled to Sydney as emergency.

Heart has taken all 15 match-fit senior players (Golgol Mebrahtu has just returned to the youth team), including defender Steve Gray, with Fred (hamstring) ruled out for at least a week.

Croatian striker Josip Tadic and Mate Dugandzic are set to come into the XI with Jason Hoffman, Nick Kalmar and Macallister competing for the last remaining spot.

"Mitchinson is travelling with the squad, Macallister and Thompson are ok so selection wise we're not sure how we'll go, it's about the best mix," he said.

"Josip Tadic did well last week and had the chance that Matt Ryan saved, so the coach has got a few options.

"Fred and Ben Garuccio (international duty) are the only ones from the starting line up out."

So the wanderer s are a better team in their competition than the giants are in the AFL...... :-k

  who the fukk cares!

The AFL decided to develop the giants into their own team, not just pull experienced players from everyone else. They'll be awesome in a few years and the fans won't care a bit about their first 2-3 years of struggling. Their climb will be exciting to watch.

Wanderers will do ok, but as has been shown before, the bubble in soccer usually lasts a few seasons before their own pop it themselves.

Wanderers will never be bigger than any of the West Sydney RL sides and anyone who thinks this is an a grade moron.

WSW played 3 games and already have a smaller average than the eels who came last and they have already got a lower crowd than what Parra did this year which happened to be against the storm on a Monday night while having a foot across our throats in last place. WSW have already played their biggest rival, the crowds will be all down from here.

I expect their average to be around 9k.

I tend to agree with you parra, but if the wanderers win some more you can guarantee there home average will be above 9k. Melbourne heart are the lowest away crowd pullers of all the a-league teams, they are new themselves after all. The WSW vs Heart game will be the lowest drawing game all season imo.

the point here parra .. is that this lame ... ridiculous & buttathon excuse from singlet wearers .... that it takes time to get a new side off the ground
has been exposed again

look at our 2 latest sides
the Storm & Titans ........ hit the ground running , wins all ova the place in their early years

soccers
the Wanderers ...... 2 wins & a draw in their first 3 games

the VFL's
the Thuns & Midgets
8 wins from 66 games ............ 8-[

who cares? So a team goes well out of the gate. Another takes time to develop a young group that will grow together into a great team.

Either way the fans will come. One will just take longer. But I believe the benefits will be greater for the latter because the local support will feel the team is theirs and was developed under their culture, not just some bunch of players stuck together artificially.

Rubbish. How were the Swans accepted? Pretty darn well Id say. They were very unsuccessful for years yet started with few if any local players.

Swans had a few crowds at the SCG under 6k in the early years. Now they've been the highest drawing team across all codes in Sydney for 18 years in a row. Typical myopic League rubbish. Things don't work instantly? quit while you're behind. If the Swans were an nRL team they'd have folded. AFL looked further ahead, and hasn't looked back since. GWS will have setbacks, they'll post some low crowds, there'll be doom and gloom articles and Leagueies will lick their lips hoping for the worst. But the AFL will perservere and keep plugging away. Leaguies see it as a money pit. We see it as an investment. Different mentalaties that reflect the different standings of each code.

I can't believe you just tried to use the Storm and Titans as examples of successful expansion. Storm averaged 12k in a premiership year. As to the Titans, how on earth is starting well and fading over 5 years to the wooden spoon better than starting with a wooden spoon and rising over 5 years towards finals? What world do you live in?

we're talking about why the 2 VFL expansion sides can't beat an egg you half wit
the excuse from the tight shorts brigade is .... they're new .. thats it... nothing to add !! 8-[

my examples prove this is BS , & a load of VFL but but butting... I've provided lots of examples of competitive teams being strong from the get go if the recruiting is done right.
the VFL has Farked these 2 sides up badly

theres no certainty the thuns will see any success in their first 5 years .. only praying they will .. from delusional singlet wearing C heads like you
and Gold Coasters have already seen one of their other sides winning & winning well...

thats why the VFL had to have a winning side straight away like the NRL did ... instead they have a bumbling embarrasment
Gold Coast fans will not wait for them to be a success
I'll back the Titans to be back in the finals long before the thuns will for their first time

& its game ova if this happens
ship has sailed
end of
