I have now examined the 2010 and 2009 ratings. I can't use 2009 because the pay tv ratings for the NRL aren't included.

But 2010 was most enlightening.

AFL: 82,335,000
NRL: 73,436,000

So between 2010 and 2011 the AFL ratings went up by 3 million and the NRL ratings went down by 1 million. And that was despite the AFL having an extra game caused by the grand final draw and replay.

This all part of the AFL fans "we only count the things that make us look good" approach. This pretending or not knowing that 7m Australians are not included in the 5 city count really is either amusing or worrying in that these AFL people dont actually know the demographics of the country - that NSW/QLD have different demographics to the other states with more people living in regional cities.

The classic of all of this is that in negotiations for their new TV deal the AFL hierarchy both used and quoted the Repucom Report which included both metro and regional ratings to show that the NRL had the highest aggregate audience.

There is some serious delusional thinking/belief going on here.

On the "Offsiders" this morning even Caroline Wilson did not argue that NRL had the highest aggregate audience. Then again she "hates" the AFL so much she would say anything to make them look "bad"

Enarelle there are no reliable ratings figures for regional Australia so they can not be included. If what you say is true about this Repucom Report, it was clear that they regarded any regional figures to be irrelevant to the deal. The result was the record deal they acquired. Caroline Wilson didn't argue the point because she knew there was no reliable evidence either way and she played it safe.

What counts is what's relevant to those with money in their pocket. What's relevant to them is the capital city ratings.

"There are no reliable ratings for regional Australia so they cannot be included." That translates into when you include regional Australia NRL looks good - well actually the best. Show me an official communique from AFL management where they dispute the overall ratings. Where they say it is not true that the NRL had the highest ratings. You wont find it because they cannot.

This ridiculous AFL argument that somehow regional WA/SA and Tasmania can somehow make up the gap is flawed. To make up a 15m gap you need to find a population the size of Melbourne ie 4m+ not 500k.

The Repucom report when it appears shortly will have the total ratings for everywhere as they did last year and the NRL won easily even with two AFL grand finals.

I looked it up and it shows only the top rating programs, not all the programs. The AFL is more consistent and the NRL is dragged down by poor rating games. That's why the complete totals favour the AFL.

Precisely. Until all regional markets are counted, the regional argument will continue to be ignored by those in the media who negotiate sports tv rights. The almighty capital cities are all that counts. And the AFL absolutely dominates in the capital cities count, hence the record media rights deals... the latest $1,253 Billion banked for the AFL.

the impressive strength & popularity of the NRL & the apparent lack of any interest in the AFL is evident every week in the regional ratings

the results of the biggest rating TV shows in Canberra in 2011 is stark proof
all people want to watch in regional NSW & QLD ... a population of nearly 6 Million people

Rubbish. Using a flawed ratings system in a pathetic attempt to prove a point. National figures that count all the people in the capital cities will always be the most important currency for tv networks based in the capital cities who in the end stump up the money for tv rights to Australian sports.

Not at all.. Even old Roy admitted on Offsiders yesterday that Vlad should be congratulated for the record breaking tv deals he has negotiated to prove the AFL is the undisputed No.1 code.

Oh and interesting that even he admitted that the NRL includes extra games, SoO and international matches to try and fudged the numbers in the NRL's favour. Pathetic, but doesn't change the fact the tv networks will always pay more for the AFL and the AFL provides advertisers more opportunities to promote their products nationwide.

Roy said yesterday the NRL will be lucky to get $1 Billion. Certainly wont match the AFL according to him. Painful to watch for you lot but nevertheless, reality.

This is why when I calculated the totals from the ratings listings on this website I left those games out. Indeed, Beaussie, it is fudging because they aren't even NRL games. They are ARL games. When the NRL negotiate their net deal, State of Origin and Test Matches will not be included.
