AFL crew have become so caught up in their precious clubs they not only fail to recognize other sports but also the importance of state and country to over half the population. AFL goes no where in NSW/ACT/QLD because those kids want grow up and represent. They want to be a Lockyer,Hayden,Healy,Waugh,Clarke,Cahill,Neill,Gallen,Genia etc

Yeah because the polynesian guys value playing for there country over all things.  How many have chosen Origin over country just for the cash. The international side of the game is a very poor cousin to other international sports.Dont be silly and mention them in the same breath.Kids dont choose league because it is an international sport surely theyd choose union if this is the path they wanted..What a joke. Then again if they want to play in front of big crowds and make decent money origin and the internationals is all they have.Theyll rarely if ever experience it in the domestic competition.

NRL has a superior program of representative games compared to AFL which has none. the NRL m is highly successful and becoming more successful. Such an easy victory in this category for the NRL.

Expansion decisions are in the wind but may not be what wannabe clubs want to hear
Date: July 15 2012

Adrian Proszenko

Potential new franchises will soon get an answer on NRL expansion - but it's unlikely to be the one they're hoping to hear. Sin Bin has been told the ARLC is likely to make a definitive call on whether to expand in late August, around the time the television rights deal has been thrashed out. Should they decide to increase the number of teams, prospective franchises will be given four or five months to put in bids with a view to NRL entry in 2015. However, it's becoming increasingly likely the status quo will remain and they will have to wait longer still. While the broadcasters are always looking for more quality content, it's believed - at least in initial discussions - their appetite for more games isn't matched by a dollar commitment that would make new clubs feasible. The commission is also mindful that most existing clubs are running at a loss and extra teams would only further dilute the playing talent.

Eye sale cashes up Ten for bid on NRL rights

TEN Network has sold outdoor advertising business Eye to oOh!media in a deal worth possibly $145 million, putting the free-to-air network on a firmer financial footing as it bids for NRL broadcast rights.

The media company will receive $120m in cash from the outdoor advertising company's owner, Champ Private Equity, and a deferred consideration of $25m payable three years after completion.

Ten chief executive James Warburton said proceeds from the sale would be used to pay down debt and strengthen the balance sheet after last month's $200m capital raising, as a $US125m ($120m) debt facility matured in March.

"It will make our balance sheet stronger by further reducing debt and will give us additional opportunity to invest in the creative renewal of Ten's television content," Mr Warburton said.

Ten's group chief financial officer Paul Anderson said it had not decided how much of the proceeds would be invested in programming, but acknowledged the deal could boost its interest in the NRL sports rights.

NINE LOSING TV WAR

THE show isn't over yet, but Channel 9 is bracing itself for the possibility it will miss out on retaining the rugby league broadcast rights. The mood at the long-term rights-holders has been described to us as "pessimistic".

Over at Channel 10, though, they are feeling "supremely confident" about their chances of winning out.

Things are looking good the only way 9 can retain everything they have is by stumping up the cash to beat what 10 and/or 7 (potentially either together or just combined) could offer.

9 are in the weaker negotiating position with both 7 and 10 so even to split the rights still means 9 are poised to pay overs to retain even a portion.

10 are in the best position as they are prepared to pay for all of it and now have the best working arrangement with Fox but they are also willing to negotiate with 7 & 9 - which pits 7 and 9 against each other for best pricing. 10 will sacrifice things like State of Origin etc if it means getting solid week-in week-out ratings.

How are ch10 going to afford "everything"?

If the NRL get better FTA coverage the payTV component will suffer. Why would payTV pay more for a worse deal?

JALF,
What do channel 10 need to get everything 800 million -1.4 billion?? Can they afford this? Are the big guns willing to risk the money? Channel 10 back in the day were strugging to find 200 million for some of the AFL rights in an era where TV companys were in much better financial condition. In my uneducated opinion I can see 10 going for some of the rights but to go for the whole package they would have to have foxtel and maybe even C7 buying a majority of the rights off them and they would need to buy them quickly or even have the deals done now. You seam to be well informed are you a C10 insider?

Just depends on how desperate 9 are willing to get. Either way nine is going to pay big time. Ten are doing everything thing in there power to get the rights. They sold Eye media specifically to raise revenue for the rights.
