On FTA or PTV the NRL win easily. Does a hollow victory from having 4 FTA games to 3 (3 live to 1), 9 PTV games to 5 give you some type of peverse pleasure? On FTA or PTV the NRL rate much better - simple fact!
The only game that is much of a muchness is the Friday night games and even then the NRL has two games with TV into the favoured market place. The AFL could have gotten a much bigger TV audience by doing what the NRL has done and gone with Monday, Sunday and Thursday night footy, every game independently shown live, but they have chosen not to do this. Instead they have given the fans at the games what they want and fans outside the heartland a chance to watch their teams live. Lots of saturday and Sunday day games for the kids to attend and most games on live FTA TV into the home markets.
When AFL games have been shown seperately from other games the ratings are about the same as the NRL. Friday night at best for the NRL is a draw with AFL winning more then losing and thats often with two games merged for the NRL. round 1 for the AFL showed this.
Pies our first 4 rounds proved that NRL rates over a million on friday even without the double header you see now.
AFL cannot touch NRL on FTA or FOX ratings those are the simple truths that some on here cant except...

But yet we out rate you most Fridays and overall during the season with the same audience.

Kids play there own sports on a Saturday. Stop with hollier than thou attitude. Demetriou's as much or more a businessman as anybody. The NRL accepted the lesser offer from 9/foxtel for the good of the game.
We have played thrusday night footy maybe 2-3 times with ratings over a million every time despite going up against the Olympics. But again its not good for the fans and C7 have good rating programing on thursday nights.
When the AFL added the 9th game they could have gone for a Monday night game and it would have been a success for a ratings point of view. But it would have taken away from the crowds even more so. Of course it was a business decision to grow the game from grassroots and crowds rating then tV ratings. Perhaps it is the wrong approach we might find out in the future.
If 10 offered more money then 9, then the NRL would have taken the deal. 1billion + with 4 FTA games + a fox deal would have been a win for both the commision and the fans, first and last rights wouldnt have changed this.

As a condition of handing back the game, News ltd had to be given the 1st and last clause until 2028. Virtually assuring them of tv coverage and no competitors. By accepting the news LTD/9 joint venture they agreed to give up this right. Placing them in an even stronger positition next time.

Not a big difference with the AFL games having FTA ratings taking away some of their ratings. You could argue that round 1 is a big round and I am happy to continue the study when we have the bye rounds for AFL. You could also note that NRL has 2 saturday night games on fox at the same time.
From that list at least 2 of those matces were shown on a 2hour delay.
I can't see how being on FTA would make much if any difference. Surely if a person folks out for PTv he's going to watch it. Add Free in hi definition where available.
But I think the most unfair part is including 3 NZ matches and only showing the home viewers of one team.

So what you are saying is that people in Adelaide, Perth or sydney wouldnt get PTV ot find a Foxtel set if their teams wernt on FTA. Thats exactly what i do if im not at the game and my team is on fox. When its on FTA I watch it from home.
Not unfair for the Warrior games at all it is showing the same market. OZ PTV. I took out the one game which clearly stated delayed for the NRL. I didnt notice any others with delayed next to it. I would be happy to take them out if they are delayed.

Yes a floored system Pies has there,
Example
Sat 13/04/13 730pm PTV NRL MEL vs SOUTHS
379k
Sat 13/04/13 730pm PTV NRL CAN vs WAR
85k + NZ sky
TBA
Concurrent ratings for 13/04 Sat 730pm NRL PTV =
464k atm Nz Sky to add
As you an see the Raiders game is still missing the NZ numbers which ave around 100k.
Now with this in mind the concurrent ratings for these 2 games would have been around 564k. Any concurrent AFL games ever reach over 400k?
Nope
Now you see how far behind you guys really are when NZ ratings are added for the NZ warriors, its embarrassing you AFL fans cop a hiding like never before.

I understand that. Im just comparing foxtel viewers for the two sports. With the same popuation (23 million potential viewers each). If the NRL got to suddenly have an extra 4.4 million (20% extra) then that would be much more unfair, unless I got to do the same for the AFL. If I could include AFLs NZ viewers as well we could do a OZ and NZ comparison (im sure the NRL would win that one easily).

How is it fair to restrict the viewers to just Foxtel when comparing the viewers of AFL/NRL ? In 1994 If the NRL, had know that only Foxtel viewers, or only Australian TV companies, were going to be counted in viewers number ratings Im sure they would of located a team elsewhere.
If you don't include NZ you are comparing 100% of The AFL with 90% of the NRL .....And still coming up with the silver medal

I understand what you are saying, however I am choosing to compare the same population. In fact you could say I am only comparing some of the OZ population(those with foxtel) If I could I would compare the NZ population for both. Feel free to add the NZ ratings for the NRL to my research if you want to.

Nrl smashed in the ratings yesterday, both FTA and Fox
@MediaweekAUS: Thu TV FTA #AFL #ANZACDay 940k: Seven 847k (Mel 581k Ade 130k Per 137k) 7mate 93k (Syd 46k Bri 47k) #AFLBombersPies
@MediaweekAUS: Thu STV #AFL #ANZACDay #AFLBombersPies 386k #AFLSaintsSwans 346k #FoxFooty
nRL
@MediaweekAUS: Thu TV #NRL #ANZACDay #NRLSYDSGI Nine 508k GEM 23k #NRLMELWAR FoxSports 306k
That's only 23k for Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth combined on FTA

Very, very ordinary numbers for the NRL today - that all I can say on that one.

Ouch! Embarrassingly low numbers for the nRL.
