Its the nature of their season though. For example the extra rounds are balanced by reduced matches in those rounds, and the potentially reduced crowds and audiences are made up for by Origin itself. When it comes to league we sometimes have a very narrow view trying to view it through the prism of a sport that long ago decided rep games were near pointless, when perhaps a wider look is needed. Origin is farily balanced when taken in the season whole IMO.
it is what it is though. SOO in Aussie rules died a natural death because, in comparison to our national competition with players from every state, it was meaningless. If Aussie Rules was only popular in Victoria and WA AFL SOO may still be popular.

I wonder how RL SOO would go if a significant proportion of their stars came from 6 states and not 2? If they had strong following in more than 2 states?

Exactly .
Yet all RL fans hear is you can't count SOO,.
Yes we can .
It's part of our season .

& you nailed it about looking at RL through the AFL prism .

A good example is the UN 18 comp .
Somehow according to swines RLs UN 18 was not as good because it was not set up the same as the AFL .

SOO is a beast .
It impacts our season . It also is one of the biggest sporting events in this country .

I don't know what is hard to understand.

For years we had a straight premiership first past the gate wins, during this period we played State games between NSW and Qld, it wasn't SOO because NSW had the big comp with all the money so anyone from whatever League playing state or nation headed to NSW. During this time we also had our yearly Internationals.

A few decades later a Grand Final was decided upon with semi finals leading up and all that, we still had a state comp between NSW and Qld and the city/country game followed later on by the Internationals.

Not long after this, the NSWRL decided to help out during the war so they started holding the traditional Rugby League ANZAC day games to raise money/food/stamps/clothes/Blankets/whatever for the troops and anyone else returning, this has changed formate over the various 7 or 8 decades but it's still around today and added to again after being made a single game for 3 decades. NSW and QLD still play each year after city/country followed by the Internationals.

Later on in the 60's we start seeing knockout comps emerge like the Toothes Cup, Panasonic cup, AMCO Cup and so on played under lights usually on a Tuesday or Wednesday night iirc, some games were played in the most weirdest places you could imagine a pro sport being played, PNG, NZ, Country sides capable of beating the big city premiership sides and so on, we still had ANZAC day games, City/County, NSW/QLD followed by Internationals.

From the 80's to more or less now not much has changed in regards the formate Rugby League has followed for the last 100 odd years in Aus, Pre Season now with a 9's comp (was a 7's comp for decades) and some World Club challenge games. Premiership season starts and heads to Easter, we then have our ANZAC games plus an International (will be moved after this season) plus City v Country, then SOO starts, once SOO is finished we go on to the end of the season for the premiership followed by the Internationals.

Then we start again, it's more or less been like this for 100 years in Australian Rugby League, we know what we are watching and when, we don't need anyone to tell us how to run the comp, it's survived 100 years without too much tinkering.

Isnt that like bragging a grand final got a big crowd? Or say a grand final team bragging about getting a big crowd at the grand final? You would expect it would? Like if manly averages 12 thousand all year and say roosters averaged 30000 and manly pointing to the grand final crowd if they made it to boast the biggest crowd of the year.

But it was a great game which i missed as forgot when masterchef was on but caughr the end on radio when the car.

I do wonder why rl cant get tge crowds and atmosphere at more games. If they wete able to create the same around more home and away games they would certainly inceasr crowds overall ... As that atmosphere iswhat can bring alot of people in. I guess it is a chicken and egg thing. Thought

I don't think crowds in the NRL are as big an issue as people make out. By world standards the crowds are strong. Italy and France have populations of about 60 million and soccer is the national sport but their major comps get averages of about 20,000 or a bit more. The NRL is the major sport for only about 12 million and gets average crowds of about 17,000. Thats pretty good.

That is a good point darren. Makes the AFL crowds look even better, but true re rl crowds and soccer and union for that matter. I guess it comes in for the code warriors bragging about which isbetter etc.

It does raise the questiob however whether it isa cultural thing however if that wad the case sydney swans would get similar crowds to nrl in sydney or is it about thr sport per se. Why does AFL generally draw such big crowds?

In isolation that may be the case. But unless you havent noticed this forum is dedicated to debating which Australian sport is number 1. So when comparing NRL crowds to the AFL we are entitled to snigger

I would say it is a cultural thing to do with AFL. They seem to be able to motivate their followers to go to games. Even in Sydney they get quite big crowds but the tv ratings are very low so a good percentage of their following actually attend games.

It does seem strange that League is outrating the AFL by quite a way this year but only get half the crowds attending matches. I think we need an investigation.

No Union club comp outside s15 get average crowds of 20k, never has and the s15 is not averaging 20k now unless SA crowds are holding them up.

RL in Australia is the biggest rugby comp on Earth for crowds TV ratings the lot, all the French and English Union have over the NRL are all the private owners who can and do spend a few bob here and there.

Before the ARL took the mantle as the biggest Rugby comp on Earth, the English Rugby League was the powerhouse of world Rugby, they had the crowds and all the money esp after the 2nd world war where they were getting club crowds of anywhere up to 60-70,000 for big matches and crowds around the 100,000 mark plus for finals. Shit, even little towns like Featherstone with around 8k would sell out their ground weekly with a capacity bigger than their town.
