no, the actual ratings area for sydney ratings is 4.5m. The biggest difference is prime time captures casual viewers who just happened to be home. Afternoon shows have far less casual viewers, hence prime time always rates far higher.
If sydney is 4.5m catchment what is Melbournes?
melbourne includes Geelong so its 4.5m. Sydney only includes 4.5m
I am not going to take your word Xman, link please.

1 Sydney New South Wales 4,605,992
2 Melbourne Victoria 4,169,103
3 Brisbane Queensland 2,146,577
4 Perth Western Australia 1,832,114

9 Wollongong New South Wales 288,101

Going by these numbers its hard to believe that the metro population for Melbourne is the same as Sydney. You can add Geelong to the metro Melbourne catchment it still does not add up. So i think it time to give yourself a BS point...

its well known. Raderdave said it in this very thread. But ive got to say, if it wasnt the SYdney NRL numbers would be terrible. Rating at 20% when according to you the AFL rates at over 30%

Any programs including sport rates far higher in prime time compared to afternoon because casual viewers are home. Sunday prime time rates higher than Saturday.

Overall both the NRL GF and AFL GF rated far higher proportionally in Melbourne compared to Sydney, proving again that Melbourne love sport and Sydney love... :-k ...madi gras?

Hows this: The NRL in Prime time rated only 400k more in Sydney than the AFL on Saturday arvo. Imagine if the AFL was prime time! Sydney may have watched the AFL GF at the same rate as the NRL GF!

But lets not get away from the main issue. For the umpteenth year in a row:

The AFL GF rated higher than the NRL GF despite being shown on Saturday arvo!

How do you arrive at that? Less Sydney viewers than the Swans have ever gotten in an AFL Grand Final. Whereas it was the most Melbourne viewers for a Storm GF.

Less sydney viewers watched the nrl grand final also ;) these ratings prove that sydney is on the decline while melbourne is on the rise, which is great news for a victorian dominated sport such as AFL

THE NRL Grand Final was no match for Saturday's AFL Grand Final in the ratings stakes, after the showdown saw the Sydney Swans beat Hawthorn.

Channel 9's Rugby League Grand Final Presentation averaged 2.424 million viewers.

That was a whopping 700,000 less than Seven's AFL presentation which averaged 3.196 million viewers.

The Storm v Bulldogs NRL Grand Final match averaged 2.401 million viewers.

That was way behind the monster 2.937 million viewers for Saturday's Swans v Hawks clash.

Seven's AFL Grand Final ratings were boosted by big numbers in Sydney where 740,000 fans watch the Swans hold the Premiership cup aloft.

More than 3 million Australians watched the rugby league grand final clash between the Melbourne Storm and the Canterbury Bulldogs.

The Sunday evening match drew a national audience of 3.68 million viewers, which includes the five capital cities and viewers in regional areas.

That climbed to 3.711 million viewers for the presentation of the winning team.

The pre-game entertainment drew a national (capital city plus regional) audience of 2.02 million viewers.

Channel Nine's coverage ranked No.1 in the 25- to 54-year-old, 18 to 49 and 16 to 39 demographics.

With audience volumes like that driving the numbers, a win for the night was a no-brainer for Nine.

It took out the night with an impressive audience share of 40.8 per cent.

In the 25 to 54 demographic – Nine's declared preferred demographic – that rose to 47.2 per cent.

But for those who delight in comparisons between codes, the AFL edged out the rugby league in terms of ratings.

On a national audience basis (capital city plus regional viewers), Saturday's AFL grand final between the Sydney Swans and Hawthorn drew an average of 3.95 million viewers for Channel Seven.

That number climbed to 4.16 million for the post-match presentation.

Final numbers

National figures (Does not include Pay TV)
AFL
Match: 4.05m

NRL
Match: 3.86m

The AFL really needs a twilight grand final next year to compete with the nrl, especially seeing as the nrl final will start at 7:15pm next year.
