I had to look that up whacko - and did a quick search

AI gave me this (so take it with the skepticism that comes with using AI as a source).

Several players recruited from the Western Sydney area have made it to the AFL. Notable examples include Kieren Briggs and Nick Shipley, both of whom are GWS Giants Academy graduates and currently on the Giants' AFL list. James Peatling, a mid-season draftee, also hails from Western Sydney and is another GWS Giants Academy graduate. Other players recruited from the region include Jake Brown and James Bell, who were drafted to the Sydney Swans. Jack Buckley and Nick Shipley were drafted by the GWS Giants. AFL Sydney also mentions Jarrod Brander (West Coast Eagles), Charlie Spargo (Melbourne), and Doulton Langlands (St Kilda) as players from the region drafted in 2017.

not sure how many players who came up through the victorian RL as juniors have been recruited to an NRL team though.

Another quick search and found this -article - 1 year old though. https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2024/ ... al-players

Ahead of the NRL season which sees the return of State of Origin to Melbourne for the first time since 2018, Storm forward Christian Welch said the club’s record of producing junior talent was “probably not good enough to be honest”.

“The reality is, we’re 25, 26 years old,” he said. “We’ve had five Victorian men’s players.”

The Storm’s head of pathways, Tim Glasby, echoed his sentiment. “We’re really disappointed that we haven’t had more,” he said. “Five in 25 years isn’t enough.”

to be honest I'm surprised it is as high as five - but also - thisi s just playing for the storm - maybe there are other teams that have recruited from victoria - but not someone who moved to victoria as a 16 year old who has played rl all his (vice versa re: AFL players from western sydney) but a home grown/developed talent.
good effort on the research.
think it was you that stated in another thread, once a code is dominate in an area it wont change with in a few years to be a dominate area for the other code. the AFL has a national footprint in recruiting players.
PV Landys knows this hence why he wants the WA government to fund everything. especially the grass roots level programs. this is where you hav to give it to the AFL for continue to fund this. for all the mockery the NRL fans give GWS and GWC those areas where the teams are based are producing players where as Melbourne and Victoria is Not.

I think the reason to go to Perth, or one of them, is the fact that it is indeed an Aussie rules town with minimal rl - that’s the point - to grow the game and interest in it. It’s the same reason AFL needs to be in western Sydney. I do t think the nrl are trying to take over - just develop a niche market similar to Melbourne or wha the swans and lions have in their cities.
pretty much ( they will develop a decent market straight off the bat)

want be hard to do 25k average with 2 Optus Stadium games 1st year.

2nd year will be where it is tested.
halve the crowd for the back to back games, then throw in the novilty factor of the expats from the UK and SA.
the team is basically funded by the tax payer and PVL didnt wnt to put in any NRL money in to is, to the point he didnt even want the NRLs governing body responsible for running the club

Plus add in people travelling as sporting trip to WA - although I’ll think you’ll get fans of the old beats team coming over - I’d say they would focus this on 1 maybe two games - a bit like a Sydney team (not sure of name) has their away game against the titans earmarked as their yearly trip to the GC and their fans massively out number the titans fans (more do than usual). And in WA - those one off matches do have a novelist factor. As Leroy said / the second year (or 3rd) will be telling.

3 to 4 years will be a good indication of how well the team is traveling, WA is very one eyed AFL and Eagles followed a long way by the dockers easily dominate, but there is room for other team and codes. the NBL is massive with the wild cats. with the Government putting money in to the Bears im sure they will promote them around town & out effort in to making the team work

for the AFL game day is well set up over here with free public transport and bus & train services that will take you straight to the ground Optus & its not overly hetic so i would imagine a similar structure for the League games at HBF

though OPTUS looks beautifully set out..

i have no DOUBT BEARS will kick off at OPTUS STADIUM to a sell out.

its harder for Rugby Codes to get juniors playing though over other codes... you understand this right..
due to the physicality of the game

that is why NRL is Pushing into new territory with Touch / Tag Comps (THIS IS THE FUTURE)

not everyone wants to get belted each weekend LOL

the difference will be chalk and cheese to how Expansion side GWS started out..

GWS were terrible crowd wise for years and still are no better.. (after 15 years)

BEARS WILL START WITH A BIG BANG

question - will it be about crowd sizes per se for the Bears - as crowds haven't really been a thing for the NRL (although improving). when crowds have been pointed out people in NRL circles have always tended to come back to ratings - so will this be the true measure - whether ratings will go up.

And agreed, the AFL did a poor jonwith GWS from the outset - my comparing was more about needing to go into those large non-traditional areas to build the game there.

when the Bears double the crowds of the thuns & triple those of the grants , it will be about crowds & given how the cwowds , oh de cwowds are a thing in stumbelball ....
it will highlight just how poorly... how horrendously .... twerpball has done on the Gold Coast & in Western Sydney

there is a train line and freeway near by, but the stadium is technically on the fringe of the suburbs. its not to hard to get to but, if you wanted a bigger venue you would build it some where else

Crowds will look good and give an enhancement that the game is doing well and popular.

be interesting how NRL operate with PERTH viewership. (with Storm games mostly on FOX)
will they go that way with PERTH >> i suggest they will...
they will have a few games scattered on FTA but mostly be on FOX>

Ratings will 100% go up. your city in the comp pulls you in >> how many we shall see.

NRL WILL WANT

HBF (close to capacity each game) so 20k
Optus Games (for opening the season and big team games ) 75% capacity (1 to 2 a Season)

Tv ratings will be interesting >>

FTA if Bears could rate on Average over 50k (it will be superb.)
Origin rates around 125k per game

anything is possible really. Subiaco when it was in use, it regularly got crowds of 40, 50k in a similar setting but it was a night mare to get to and from.
regardless of how successful the bears are crowd wise i couldn't imagine they would have a 50k seater buit in the next decade or so

if there was one venue that would be easy to up grade the capacity would be HBF park due to all the stands are individually build so it would be, tear one stand down and build a new one with rest of the venue unaffected

Another quick search and found this -article - 1 year old though. https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2024/ ... al-players

Fred, there is a glaring difference here pal. The AFL can recruit players that have never seen, let alone played, the mess and turn 'em into superstars overnight.

That's because it is a simple limited skill game with few rules and/or need for athletic ability. Exhibit 1. the lanky Yank who was a practice partner for a womens basketball team in the USA. Never seen a game. Never heard of it. Never played a game. Comes to Australia. Becomes an AFL superstar. Simple.

They do the same with Sydney kids. They scout a lanky kid, pay 'em a bucket load of money and quick smart turn 'em into an AFL 'standard' player. Such is the simplicity of the fumbling mess.

NRL clubs can't do that. To be a competent RL player you need years of intense training, playing and coaching. Melbourne would have to get kids at 7or 8 and keep 'em for 10 years to get 'em up to NRL standard. And if they live in Victoria it is so much easier to play the simple mess of the Australian Fumbling League.

Hope this helps Fred. Have a great day pal.
so some 30 plus years, Victoria a state of 5 million plus people now over 6 million have only produced a hand full of League players .

its not being a case of not being skilled or tough enough Terrance, as Hunt and Folau proved leagues best players arent skilled or good enough for AFL. and i know throwing and catching a ball from a short distance may be challenge for some select few, and look exciting for people who are very limitd abilities eg the NRL fan! its a simple fact people are not interested!

the structure of game play might appear like a mess to the NRL fan also but its far more complicated than counting to 6 and running in a straight line with team mates up a field repeatedly

fact that more people from Western Sydney a lower populated area that the whole of Victoria are playing and have played for the code at the highest level says how the codes are really traveling at grass roots level!

make all the excuses you want, you cant change reality as much as you lot dont like to believe it
