And on the rexona challenge. C'mon guys. This was a bit of fun that apparently had a range of skills... Such as jet ski racing. For mine, any such comp that has shannon eckstein not winning really isnt a test of athletism...the guy is a freak. In saying that i love billy slater and he is a freak and legend who would doninate any sport he choose. He would be a great AFL player

The future of women’s AFL looks extremely bright in the Hunter and Central Coast after the Black Diamond AFL Women’s competition unveiled four new teams that will take part in the 2016 season.

The league has expanded to ten following the inclusion of Cardiff, Gosford, Killarney Vale and Singleton.

The announcement follows the inclusion of a strong contingent of players from Newcastle and the surrounding areas in the first female Academy games between the Sydney Swans and GWS GIANTS to be held at Lakeside Oval this Saturday.

Women’s AFL has seen unprecedented growth in the state with 69,000 registered females participating in the sport last year.

All ten sides will compete in the annual Black Diamond AFL Women’s Gala Day at Tulkaba Park in Teralba this Saturday with games commencing at 10am and the final scheduled for 2pm.

Any women interested in having a game are encouraged by Black Diamond Football Operations Manager Garry Burkinshaw to come down on the day.

“Women’s AFL is growing at a rapid rate in the Hunter and Central Coast region and we’d love to see more new faces on Saturday,” Mr Burkinshaw said.
“Female footy is booming in the area so we want anyone who’s interested to come and check out what the fuss is all about.”

History
The Australian Womens Rugby League was formed in 1993 by Ian Davies, who coached the local North Sydney womens team. Several regions played organised competitions throughout the East Coast of Australia

Sydney
Illawarra
Canberra
Hunter Region
Brisbane
Ipswich
Western Australia
River Valley

Having invited members to attend, an interim AWRL committee was formed. This committee was responsible for the organisation of interstate competition and international test matches and would also oversee the various competitions being staged all over Australia. With little financial assistance though, the AWRL would rely on its membership contributions to see that women were represented in this male dominated sport.

After several attempts to affiliate with the Australian Rugby League in 1995, 96 & 97, the AWRL finally took a positive step with affiliation to the governing body in 1998. Then President Laurel Savage and Secretary Veronica White convinced the league to take on the womens game and see it as a positive step for the sport in general. The future ahead though was a busy one with the AWRL restructuring its entire league, establishing the State and Territory WRL Bodies in Queensland, New South Wales and Canberra.

Since 1995 the AWRL has staged international fixtures against other women rugby league countries.

1995 Australia vs New Zealand 2 Test Series
1996 Australia vs Great Britain 3 Test Series
1997 Australia vs New Zealand 2 Test Series
1998 Australia vs Fiji 2 Test Series
1999 Australia vs New Zealand 3 test series
2000 1st Womens RL World Cup staged in Great Britain
2001 Australia vs New Zealand test match
2002 Australia vs Great Britain 3 test series
2003 Australia vs New Zealand Maoris
2nd Womens RL World Cup staged in New Zealand
2004 Australia vs New Zealand 2 test series

2005 Australian u21's vs Auckland u21's in Auckland

An unofficial tour was made in 1993 with an Australian womens representative team touring Fiji. Only one player from this side still actively competes in the womens game today. Jeanette Luker has been playing the sport since 1991 and plays for Brothers Ipswich WRLFC in Ipswich, Queensland.

Since 1998 the AWRL has staged several NSW vs QLD State of Origin Clashes with several matches played at NRL venues including the Brisbane Broncos, Newcastle Knights and the Canberra Raiders.

Schoolgirls Rugby League is now being developed by the AWRL with the assistance of the ARL Foundation. Queensland WRL is working well in ensuring their player base is strengthened over the coming years with the AWRL formulating a 3 Year Development plan for all of its affiliated members.

Though finding new competitors each year with women moving into AFL, Soccer and Rugby Union, Rugby League continues to find female newcomers to the game each year and as long as there is a female cheering in the grandstands there will always be one wanting to play the game.

Therefore the AWRL and its affiliates will always have a place in the sport, providing competition for women and girls, and supporting them in meeting their potential in rugby league.
I have read that during ww2 rugby league had a womens comp up and running, I'll see what I can find.

AFL has been trying to do the international thing for decades. Is not throught lack of trying.

It is through lack of interest from other nations.
No it has not the AFL pays more or less lip service to AFL OS compared to RL and that's because it's not its focus - yet AF has grown from nothing to 18 countries being at the last international cup - I'd say that's more than a lack of interest - you really are an idiot NRLwelaughatoursmallPenises!

Lol the AFL hasnt tried shit. Everyting the league does overseas is about bringing talent here.
So AFL is not trying shit when they have built an AFL academy in New Zealand and had exhibition matches in Wellington. Your own ceo even admits it.

And lets not forget the 16 exhibition matches AFL has played in London over the last 30 years to promote the sport or the AFL international cup they have started.

Mate if that is not trying I don't know what is.

you seem obsessed with international validation. Maybe its because its one of the only things RL has going for it when comparing to the AFL.

Insignificant international growth certainly doesnt seem to bother the NFL. They know theyre one of the worlds most popular sports without it

If the league wanted to put a team in NZ there would be one. There isnt. Work being done by AFL NZ was being done there without AFL funding until very recently when the AFL put a small amount of funding out for academy work - but most funding for NZ footy has come from Hawthorn - not the AFL.

And we've been playing exhibition matches all over the world since the fucking 80s. Try not to read too much into it. Exhibition matches are just what they say they are. Not part of some wider push.
Why play matches in overseas nations if your not trying to promote the game.
Is more than obvious AFL has been trying to gain some recognition globally for years otherwise they would not play overseas matches of any form.

Every code wants to grow their sport globally. AFL is no different. The difference is other codes have had a lot more success.

NFL has had a number of games into London per year
and there are talks of team being there..

a Big difference when the size of the USA is 340million people
and is the only football code that really matters

when comparing that to 10million people in VIC SA AND WA and tassie.
its quite small.

i love how you flogs like to think that no one plays AFL in NSW and QLD, despite it having strong leagues & continue to produce AFL players

meanwhile think that league is strong in Melboure & WA, Melbourne has produced around 5 or 6 league players in around 100 years & i cannot find any one from WA to have ever played League :(/
Australian sporting sponsorship
AFL excess of $50m
A league $30 million plus

im not comparing the AFL to the NFL for size. Im only showing that international expansion doesnt determine a sports success
