There is no true national sport like NFL in USA or EPL in the UK. Here the followers of one code hate the other almost religiously. I know I fuck around with you guys Para but the truth is I don't really care because I grew up with both, with proper scheduling and advertising they both have a place and obviously are part of our national psyche AND one being better over the other doesn't really make my life better.

I wonder how many free tickets get given away.

Will be a bit like trying to force the handful of people that turned up to the Suns and Swans match last night.

I was there. The weather was such i am surprised the players turned up.

As for giving away tickets in nz i would just make it a free event. They should try and get people there. Always supported free tickets in areas you are trying to grow the game

For mine, i think it is more about than just having a team. I think it is about things like being available across the country to play at junior and senior levels, the depth of the comp. Soccer and AFL fulfil that and other sports too such as tennis and basketball, but that alone doesnt make a sport national in and of itself. Other measures to add would how much national coverage does it get. Again AFL, soccer, netball and nrl get good national coverage. Then we can look at crowds to games across the nation. AFL is really the only sport to get decent crowds consistently across nation. Soccer does okay in melbourne and sydney but really only a few clubs. Ratings on tv maybe another measure however AFL and nrl are in their own league. Even then both struggle to rate well outside tradional areas apart from marquee games such as gf and soo for example. Then maybe looking at the make up of whete players come from. AFL and soccer draw from across the country reflecting the reach at grasdroots of each code. For mine, i see AFL as more national than AFL for many of the reasons above in particular outside traditional areas rl is very minor and if your kid wanted to play it would be a struggle in many areas. Gippsland has no rl comp whatsowver for instance.

Bur just plonking a team in city or region does not make a game national. Look at storm .. Very little grassroots work done for years and little infrastructure in place to suppirt at grassroot. Western sydney too . just plonked a team there. At least the gold coast has a strong AFL presence. Anyway

It was a bit hard to read all that Fred but I got through it all eventually. What I can add is that it's much easier for the AFL to get kids to play their game in Qld and NSW than it is for the NRL to get kids in Vic. and the other AFL states to play their game.

I think there are two reasons. One is the massive amount of money the AFL is pumping into Qld and NSW at grassroots levels. The other and I think the most important is that the Rugby codes are based on one person running into the other in a continually physical contact sport. Parents see it at the top level and don't want their kids to play because it is too tough and thats in Sydney and Brisbane. That confrontational kind of sport is an even harder sell in the AFL states. Soccer and AFL benefit by being a more kicking game.

I've got grandkids in Sydney and I went to a grandparents day last year. I heard a couple say how they were impressed by the AFL people that came to the school and gave the kids a kick around. They had a grandson who wasn't interested in any sports but liked playing AFL because it wasn't very hard to play.

I think that's the difference in the codes trying to get kids in the non traditional areas.

Hi AFL crap. I suggest you look up rl in victoria. I lived in morwell for awhile and no clubs within an hours and a half drive in berwick i thibk. Even if i lived in berwick there is one league that has only a dozen clubs that includes clubs from geelong.

So it is very hard to play if you want to.

No presence outside of eastern states.
5 teams outside out NSW but only 1 outside of NSW/QLD.

You count Canberra yet you don't for AFL.
Your sport has the lowest of any participation rate - half the crowds, 3rd of membership, 100 mil less in revenue. Keep deluding yourself!

Sorry AFL crap .. That was meant to be parra. Seriously parra, look at rl in victoria. It is not very big. I lived in morwell and no rugby league comp at all, actuallt nothing east of berwick. Nothing east or south of geelong with geelong i think 1 club that plays in the melbourne league.

Go for a drive around the streets and see if any kid has a rl ball ... Or in schools.. If any kid is throwing a rl ball. I hazard to guess this would be worse in sa and tassie.
