Hi intencity

I would disagee that there is no interest in the suns. Sure it has dropped from 2 years ago but they are always in the community and papers and talked about on radio. I would say it is on par with the titans in that regard. In fact the radio will have the suns on more so than the nrl. The local commercial station does all their home games i think and always on abc. When it is titans and suns on at same time i am not sure what the abc do there.

But from my point of view there is still plenty of interest. You see people in their jumpers, stickers on cars etc. I think they also have 13000 members? Or there abouts and crowd average is around 13 or 14 thousand. Yes, some of those are opposition supports but suns are their second team and will go other weeks their team isnt playing. I also read there are more AFL clubs (junior and senior) on the gold coast then rl clubs ..athough not sure as to the veracity of that cliam. There may even be more teams ?

though if they were as popular as the Titans or on the same level
the ratings on tv would reflect that..

I use the example of the Broncos and the Lions.
If they had just as many juniors or more as they say the game would be embedded, yet no where do any stats back any of this up.

Well the Lions are a one city town so the chances are they are mostly lions supporters. Plus who knows how many are watching on Fox.

On a typical FN game the ratings in Melbourne for AFL or NRL for Sydney would be made up of around 80% of fans who dont support either club IMO. If you left these fans out of it the ratings would be well below 100k
Are you suggesting there are no other AFL supporters in Brisbane other than that 20k?

If what your saying is true , then why on a Friday night is the Adelaide, Perth. Brisbane audience double when a team from that area is playing?

No, Im suggesting there would be a far higher proportion of AFL fans who support Brisbane in Brisbane than NRL fans who support say Cronulla in Sydney, basically because Sydney has 9 teams and Brisban 1 team.

Would that really be surprising given the Suns are a new expansion team with no success?

I Agree! so about 15K of the 20 k support the lions( 75%). Whilst about 100k of the 300k would be Cronulla supporter.

I disagree. Youre assuming every Lions supporter watches every game. Considering how poorly they are performing I'd suggest its a pretty low percentage.

Youre also assuming cronulla fans primarily make up the total audience of Sydney when Cronulla play. Given their average crowds of 10k I'd say they would be lucky to have 100k fans total, and only about 50k watching them at most

Total Sydney audience 300k!!!!!!! 1/3 1/3 1/3 1/3 1/3 ! .

If there's a higher percentage of Brisbane fans watching the AFL that would mean the lions % is smaller, maybe just 7 or 8k watching the wions

I think you will find a lot of rl supporters on the gold coast, however, as a traditional rl area i imagine a lot do not follow the titans- whereas it does appear that many AFL fans in the area have the suns as their second side and are right behind the suns. It doesnt seem to be the case with the titans for some reason. But many will watch the titans along with any nrl game so that may explain ratings. Just a theory though. I will have a look at fox sporting pulse page to see how many clubs although dont think it includes the senior sides. I will get back to you

At one stage AFLs ceos said another AFL team in Queenslands North was a big possibility.

Does'nt seem likely anymore. Brisbane Lions are in a huge mess despite multiple premierships.

Lions are indeed a mess but my feel it is more to do with bsd mansgment practices off the feild couple with some poor recruitment a few years back. Then a heap of young players leaving due to the go home factor which traditional states have less of. I think things like zones and the academies will help with this as more local talent is identified. There is very strong local AFL league and a large junior comp and comps so enough interest for sure. Just need better managment

Ummm....you do realise that was it was nearly 15 years ago and we need to remember at those times when they were a powerhouse they were strongly followed across QLD.
