Yep pretty sure we have many old threads here on the Storm's financial handouts from the NRL which have resulted in their virtual dominance of the NRL since their inception. Yet like you say, league flogs will try tell you their comp isn't rigged. Only happens in the AFL apparently

That aside and back on topic, how good do the Giants look this year? Thinking on going out to see them this weekend.
Isn't rigged, but the AFL have given the Giants a tonne of concessions to help them become successful on the field. AFL see the Giants being successful will help them actually get support.

I still can't see multicultural Blacktown getting into a sport that is pretty much only played by gangly white Aussies.
Well, keep watching GWS Giants then. It will be like watching a tiny seed grow into a great eucalyptus. Day by day imperceptible increments, but over time, mind-boggling.

As for the 'gangly white Aussies' comment: That is just plain offensive, reeks of inverted racism, and can only seem true to people who've taken no notice of the multicultural backgrounds of the players.

For heavens sake! Have you conveniently NOT noticed that the recently departed CEO of the AFL is a Greek-Cypriot Aussie? Or that about 10% of the players are Indigenous?

Do names like Liberatore, Coniglio, Aliir Aliir and Malceski seem Anglo to you?

Still don't get it ?!!!! Well keep your eyes shut, then. That way you'll remain warm and comfy in your ignorance.

OMG you really are so insular arnt you - I coach an u17 football side - have the following nationalities, Vietnamese, Turkish, Maori, Aboriginal, Italian, Greek - I doubt whether it's AFL, RL, RU or soccer would be any different it's all the same - if you look at the crowd at a Richmond game plenty of Vietnamese in yellow and black eye etc - to think RL holds some special place in the ethnic community is just ridiculous what a pathetic argument!

nor is there in the AFL, proven by the fat the % of indigenous players has basically stayed the same, which is also similar to your code. Maybe thr NRL also has the same rule

was well publicized that one recruiter stated if indigenous recruits werent offered more support to help their transition it may become an issue for some recruiters. He never claimed it was a policy. No one did

AFL clubs' unwritten rule on Aborigines

AT LEAST one AFL club recruiter has privately admitted to the league that he and his club would be unlikely to draft an indigenous player unless at least one parent were white.

Some clubs have also told the AFL they were now more reluctant than ever about recruiting Aboriginal players because they provided a difficult management issue. Other clubs, however, remain firmly committed to recruiting Aboriginal players.

The AFL approached several recruiters recently to talk in general terms about rumours of unease at some clubs about recruiting indigenous players, and the drop in the number of indigenous players in the game this year. There are 80 indigenous Australians on AFL lists this year, down from 85 in each of the past two years.

The complexity of the varied cultural backgrounds that AFL players come from was brought into sharp focus by the arrest in Yuendumu of Melbourne player Liam Jurrah for an alleged assault with a machete last week.

Jason Mifsud, the AFL's community engagement manager, confirmed there was a disturbing attitude existing at some clubs. ''I have had direct conversations with a number of recruiting officers. A recruiter from one club told me that 'unless they have a white parent we are not going to draft an Aboriginal player, and our club would not be alone in that.' That is a mindset that is permeating back through parts of the industry.

It was one recruiter who told Mifsud he had concerns about the level of support for indigenous players.

"I said as a throwaway line, as a ridiculous line, you might find we only recruit players with one white parent if it's not addressed now," Rendell told the Nine Network's Footy Classified.

"... I've never had a policy like that in my life. I wouldn't have a policy like that, it's ridiculous, silly. Everyone's the same.

"The comment that I made originally was stupidly trying to emphasise the problem that we've got at the moment and we need to do something about it quick and the AFL need to get involved in it."

We've discussed this at length many times. Why would he tell the AFL's indigenous officer about a racist policy?

Isn't it funny this is the same Ol garbage he said over 12 months ago - hahaha yet he doesn't address the fact the NRL generally won't consider you unless islander and it's a fact Aboriginal representation has fallen from 11% in the 80's to less than %5 now! Perhaps there is a only islander policy in the NRL?

NRL CEO Dave Smith has addressed the All Teams Dinner as part of the NRL Indigenous All Stars week on the Gold Coast on Wednesday night.

The dinner was attended by a cross section of talent from all parts of the NRL – from the grass roots to under-16s, touch players, women's teams and players from the Indigenous All Stars and NRL All Stars teams.

Also present were local elder Maureen Newtown, Chair of the NRL Indigenous Council Linda Burney, CEO of Reconciliation Australia Justin Mohamed, and Co-Chair of the National Congress of Australia's First Peoples Les Malezer.

"This week is an important one in our calendar where we celebrate the Indigenous part of our game and recognise the wonderful contribution that is made by the Indigenous community to rugby league," Smith said in his address.

"While football takes centre stage, this is really a week when we take pride in the relationship between rugby league and the Indigenous community."

The NRL CEO also joined 60 young people who were invited to take part in the NRL's Indigenous Youth Summit earlier in the week.

Activities at the summit encouraged participants to think strategically to solve problems, with visits and input from All Stars players. This created an environment grounded in education and development mixed with the game of rugby league.

"It was one of the most inspiring sessions I have been involved with," Smith said.

"Here we had 60 young future leaders of the Indigenous community, selected by our clubs because they are going well at school, pitting their wits against each other in a series of challenges as they strive to be better people and create a better life."

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders make up 12 percent of NRL players
, with that figure rising to 24 percent when it comes to the Australian Test team.

"There are so many Indigenous players and former players who perform valuable community work without any fanfare – week in, week out. The impact they have on young people is phenomenal," Smith said.

"A youngster who may not be engaged in the classroom will sit up and take notice when an Alex Johnson or a Josh Hoffman stresses the importance of education, because they look up to these players as heroes.

"It changes lives for the better. It makes a real difference to people's lives."

The NRL was the first major Australian sport to develop a Reconciliation Action Plan which commits to tackling social issues facing Indigenous people. It includes securing more jobs in the game for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders through to helping Indigenous suppliers and supporting constitutional recognition.

The NRL also has a strong stance against racism and has adopted the 'Racism Stops With Me' campaign. Smith said he was committed to seeing racism stamped out at all levels of the game.

"Inclusiveness and teamwork are two of our core values in the NRL. Inclusiveness and teamwork are what will drive growth in the game," he said.

"We have come a long way in the last three years, but we can do more and we will do more
