Well it's not like the AFL is a bastion of truth when it comes to WS numbers .

xman why argue with the basement dwellers.
for decades NSW has been producing AFL/VFL players. so aussie rules is being played in NSW and is far more popular than what the basements dwellers want to believe.
in the history of League there has been 5 players from Victoria to have played in the NRL
Notable players[edit]
Among the Victorian-born players to play in the NRL have included:
Mahe Fonua: (Melbourne Storm)[38]
Jake Webster: (Melbourne Storm, Gold Coast Titans & Hull KR) [39]
Timana Tahu: (Newcastle Knights, Parramatta Eels & NSW Waratahs).[40][41]
Craig Polla-Mounter: (Canterbury).[42]
Peter Wallace (Penrith Panthers & Brisbane Broncos)
In round 23 2012, Mahe Fonua became the first Victorian-born and bred player to play in the NRL when he made his debut for Melbourne Storm. He played his junior career for South East Titans (formerly Berwick Bulldogs) in the Victorian Rugby League.[43][44]

the AFL never actually applied to use the oval, they were asked by the council to submit player numbers and gave a preliminary figure based on post code search.
Funny stuff is the RL outrage was based on bollox :_<>

Fact is there are far more AFL players coming from NSW than NRL players coming from Victoria, which speaks volumes of where the two states are at participation-wise
http://www.aflnswact.com.au/index.php?id=253
Of the 44 players in the AFL Grand Final 2014, 11 came from NSW/ACT.
That's 25%. from NSW/ACT.
There are about 100 players from NSW/ACT and QLD presently on senior AFL lists.
This year, the Swans have 14 players from NSW, and the Giants have 8.
The flow of athletic talent into the AFL from NSW/ACT and QLD is growing directly from the success of the four northern academies.
