The onlly way it could realisticaly work is for SA and WA to combine to vs Vic, but this would leave a number of stars from NSW and QLD out. I also cant imagine fans from SA and WA showing any real passion to a combined team.

we had it for many years. It died a natural death when the game became more national and there were too many states involved. It was contrived and meaningless in the end and many of the players didnt want to play in it and the fans didnt care about it. Thats the way it is

NRL chief executive Dave Smith has given the first indication of his plans to seal a record broadcast deal, outlining how State of Origin and other assets may be offered separately to television networks in a bid to pump up the code's total return.

Smith rang executives from the free-to-air commercial networks and pay-television providers last Friday to let them know he intended to soon open up rights negotiations for five-year period from 2018.

There are figures in the industry who believe the NRL can obtain a 50 per cent increase on its present $1.2 billion deal with Channel Nine, Fox Sports and Telstra, and Smith alluded to breaking up products such as the lucrative Origin series as a likely tactic.

"I think there are lots of ways to skin the cat," Smith said on Monday. "Many other professional sports segment their properties and build franchises.

"Origin is certainly one franchise but if you looked at the way we launched the year this year, it's one of the unique things about the game. We've got our premiership ... we've got the grand final, we've got the finals series. We've got Origin, which is sport's greatest rivalry. We've got our international club game, and the potential for more conference-based match-ups internationally, and we've got the international game with the Kangaroos squad announced (on Sunday) and the World Cup in 2017.

"Add into that (the Auckland) Nines, add into that the other things we do based around the Indigenous community with the All Stars. We're in great shape and that's not just great shape today, that's great shape tomorrow. I think all those things we will increase the value of without ever losing sight of the premiership."

The NRL has jumped into action two years before its current deal expires in an effort to seal a deal before the AFL, the broadcast rights to which also run out in 2017. And news that it is likely to have three commercial networks bidding strongly, with Foxtel close to taking a 14.9 per cent stake in the Ten Network, will only enhance their ambitions.

The three Origin matches and the NRL grand final were four of the five top-rating programs of the year, illustrating the appeal in particular of the showpiece interstate series.

Smith believes the NRL enters the negotiations in a great position.

"I do feel that with both arms not tied behind my back, with no first and last rights, we are in a position where we can pitch what we've got and recognise that it's of some value," he said.

"We've done a lot of work over the last 12 months to understand what the value of our rights are. My obligation is to the fans to make sure we do the best deal we can. My job in the background is to make sure it's a well financed game so that we're always competitive with our players and equally we've got good infrastructure to play these games in.

"The one thing about the NRL and the game more generally is it has the ability to aggregate massive audiences. Last year we demonstrated that we can aggregate the biggest audiences in the country bar none. We have that opportunity because people love to watch the game. Whether you're an avid fan or a less avid fan you tune in for Origin, you tune in for the finals series, you tune in for the grand final or you tune in because you want to support the team you love."

Smith said the tightness and unpredictability of the NRL premiership should only enhance its appeal to broadcast suitors.

"It just shows you that there is hope for every single team in our competition and again that's really attractive to people that are watching it on TV or the broadcasters who are looking to build quality content into their portfolios," he said.

"I'd expect it to be well bid. I would expect people to be very interested in what we're doing because we're one of the top two top sports in the country."

It is fantastic that we have Smith leading the ARLC now .
TV rights led by someone with no
Club loyalties .
No SL or ARLC loyalties .
Especially no NEWS LTD loyalties .

by having Players from the Storm in the State of Origin Series.
This has made it even more Popular in Melbourne.. (Massive Audiences of around 400k )

This would be the same if there were teams in Adelaide and Perth. 2 or 3 players from each.
Giving the Appeal to origin more Appealing..in the state.
as they get to watch there City players compete in the Biggest Series of the year SOO

see I don't see this would affect State of Origin At AFL Level.> Would this not make it better.

fact is AFL fans nor players actually want SOO. Neither supported it when we did have it so it died. Thats the facts. Like me, most AFL fans would rather see their own club play than a meaningless rep game with a contrived team. Thats the way it is and it wont change
