About 500,000 individuals are convicted of a criminal offence each year in Australia, about 2.1% of the populaton. But only 10-12 per cent of these convictions result in a custodial sentence.

It will be interesting to compare the data in this thread with the Australia-wide background data.

We know there are about 800 senior players on AFL club lists in 2015. If 17 of the current players receive a conviction in 2015, the incidence of crime in the AFL is at parity with the background population.

It's prob stronger research to match this with the equivalent socioeconomic background/employment status of those convicted with those in broader society who are also convicted. We are talking about some fairly privileged folk here Bruce. The AFL lads particularly so. So they should be marked against their own kin so to speak.

AFL player fined over drink driving

With great power comes great responsibility - and the same can be said for AFL footballers, a Melbourne court has heard.

AFL star Jeff Garlett's licence was suspended and he was fined $450 at an informal hearing at Melbourne Magistrates Court on Friday, where he pleaded guilty to drink-driving and driving while suspended.

Police alleged Garlett registered more than double the legal blood alcohol limit when he was pulled over in Brunswick on July 14 last year.

Garlett's lawyer said the footballer was very remorseful.

His actions were the result of a relationship break-up, as well as the insecurity Garlett felt while his football contract with Carlton was up in the air.

Garlett had since taken steps to take control of his life, reunited with his partner, and built a strong friendship with Aboriginal elder Uncle Boots, his lawyer said.

"I'm sorry for what I've done," Garlett told the court in hushed tones.

Deputy Chief Magistrate Dan Muling warned Garlett he could face jail time if he drove while his licence was suspended.

"People like you can make a difference," Mr Muling said.

Garlett was traded to Melbourne late last year after falling out with the Blues.

In a woeful day for AFL footballers, Hawthorn premiership defender Brian Lake lost his licence for 18 days and was fined $750 with conviction for driving while suspended.

The 2013 Norm Smith medallist was caught driving at Burnley in December last year.

New Zealand hooker Issac Luke is set to accept a $5,000 fine for a homophobic remark he posted on Twitter in the aftermath of South Sydney's controversial Good Friday win over Canterbury, which also resulted in a Bulldogs supporter being fined $1,000 for assault.

Luke, who was fined $10,000 - of which $5,000 was suspended - and ordered to undergo an education program on tolerance and equity, made the slur in response to taunts after he reached out on social media for help to contact the victim of the assault and another fan, who was taken to hospital for treatment after being shoulder charged.

He later removed the tweet and posted an apology but the NRL said there was no place in the game for vilification of any kind and Rabbitohs chief executive John Lee said the 27-year-old had learned a lesson.

Issac Luke instagram post.
Issac Luke instagram post.
"Issac realised on that day he had made a mistake," Lee said. "There is nothing that could really go to mitigate what happened other than it was provoked, his choice of words were wrong and he has a wonderful respect for all of the community so he just made a mistake."

An NRL spokesman said Luke believed he had been provoked into posting the offensive comment and had withdrawn it and apologised soon afterwards.

"We believe that education is the most important element in dealing with vilification matters such as this," the spokesman said. "So we will require Issac to undertake an education program in tolerance and equity in addition to the financial penalty."

With Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson under fire for lashing out at a Port Adelaide fan who was antagonising him outside the AFL team's hotel and Carlton champion Chris Judd writing in a Fairfax Media column that he had also been recently harassed while ordering a take-away dinner, Lee said sportspeople had to be able to ignore provocation.

"What we have witnessed in the last week in professional sport is that there are some people who will go to any lengths to provoke athletes and coaches into responding in a negative fashion and with such microscopic examination of athletes and coaches, be it in the NRL or AFL, it just reinforces that in this environment it is important that all of us not only be beyond reproach but be seen to be beyond reproach," Lee said.

Luke had initially posted: "Just reaching out to the SSTID FANS on the whereabouts of the young SOUTHS fan who ended up in hospital last night. We have something for him, Should he see this or anyone that knows him please DM me and will try to get in contact with him. I'm gonna make sure his Easter is as happy as our South Sydney families is. Let me know please."

But he reacted to taunts from Bulldogs fans enraged over a penalty against captain James Graham that all but secured Souths 18-17 win with the offensive tweet.

"Get off my page you lil poofters. This is about a kid your fans knocked out. Well now two kids Yous dropped. We train at Redfern come down and see if you fellas are still carrying on #rulesarerules even though it was a hard penalty to take. I bet yous would've done the same had we done it to one of your players. Or we would've have even had u gooses commenting had it happened earlier on in the game. Now get off my page."

The New Zealand Human Rights Commission praised the NRL for its tough stance, saying: "We welcome the NRL calling out Issac Luke's anti-gay slur, we also welcome Issac's apology and wish to change. Sport should be about a level playing field and that starts with treating athletes with respect and mana."

The NRL announced the sanctions against Luke as Canterbury supporter Nektarios Kalaitzakis appeared in Burwood Local Court to answer charges of assault occasioning actual bodily harm after he shoulder charged 21-year-old Mathew Makaritis from behind.

An apologetic Kalaitzakis was fined $1000 and issued a good behaviour bond for an attack that police described as "totally unprovoked" in a statement of facts tendered to the court.

"When asked to describe the victim, Kalaitzakis stated 'I hit him from behind and that was a cowardly attack. I don't know what the poor boy looked like from the front I just saw a South Sydney jersey'," the statement said.

So, nobody has made a comment about it here, yet?

I mean, the on-field dick tug Knights' Korbin Sims gave to Manly's Willie Mason at Brookvale Oval last Sunday.

And big Willie says, "Oh, its alright. We're best mates!'

Do best mates do that to each other?!!!

Where exactly did those two learn to do that to each other? In the showers?

No, its not a crime to be gay, Crapper.

Its just best to get a room to do that sort of thing.

Not in front of 10,065 people, including children, on a sunny afternoon at Brookvale Oval.

And my attitude is not an outlier, Crapper. The YouTube video has gone viral. Huge! The world is gasping!

I don't agree with you, Crapper, and the only person who has a chance of changing my view is the Moderator

Until that happens, gross (but not necessarily illegal) behaviour which brings the code and its players into disrepute, by the likes of Korbin Simms or Tod Carney, gets a post here.

The NRL reacted angrily to Simms and Willie's on-field behaviour. So why should this forum cutsy to your demand and nonchalantly ignore it?

Jeez, Crapper! I believe you are right

This thread is only for illegal behaviour.

So, which thread do I put my posts about gross, obscene behaviour like Simms and Carney's?

I don't want make a new thread. Surely one exists already.

Any suggestions?
