Growing up there were two seasons. Football (AFL) season and Cricket season. Other professional sports did not exist. Ive no doubt in the Northern States for many it was Football (Union or League) season and Cricket season.

very true, in the traditional AFL states it was, with the Soccer (in Melbourne), being the other all be it a much smaller winter code.
but it was always, the AFL did their thing & the soccer did theirs, & when the Socceroos played every one became Soccer fans.

in the Northern states, the Union & League. the mentality is different. many union fans will either be a soccer or AFL fan if not at least have respect for the code. the League fans, just hate everything, many still living in the past in the super league days

They are paying attention already. Bids that engage in paranoia should be told "You're not getting the license" nice and early just to teach them a lesson in truth. After the AFL got $1.25 billion with 18 clubs, and the NRL have 16 and still got over a billion - what could the NRL do at the TV rights negotiation table with 18 clubs as well? It makes competition fierce and the ARLC will only want the best - not a pack of panic merchants engaging in propaganda. It makes the game look amateurish.

Plenty of rugby league fans like soccer and their NRL clubs even share venues. Cronulla Sharks are even talking of entering their own A League side in the future.
