Sorry wookie my figures come from the 2012 ABS report, which includes PARTICIPATION both in registered competitions and casual. I'm sorry but all levels of government and businesses rely on the ABS to provide key data. I know where the actual facts are.

The ABS data included touch and oztag, there is no way on gods green earth that touch football has 500,000 players, no way what so ever, the only independent and might I say only trusted source if that data put it at 300,000 which also includes two other "football sports".

Well lets see one reports sampled data while the other one reports actiual registrations.

One has a billion dollar tv deal, massive sponsorship, and 16,000 people per game. The other is volleyball, which as we speak is being played on beaches and in tin sheds across the country in front of dozens of people with no tv exposure. Get real.

And 1 has a vested interest with increasing numbers, with no repercussions, basically no penalty for lying. Whilst the other is an idependent organisation relied upon by government and business to provide accurate demographic data.

As for the numbers I'll provide another angle.

The only reason soccer has large participation numbers is because its 'safe'.

RL on the other hand is a sport where you MUST be mentally and physically able to put your body on the line. Sooker doesn't require that commitment. In fact, Sooker accepts whingers and cry babies in adult male bodies, such is the culture of the code.

So in summary. Sooker attracts participants from 4 to 74 and includes all those who are not willing or able to put their body on the line.

RL attracts participants from 5-45 and only those who are willing and able to put their body on the line. The rest who play oz-tag, touch etc would love nothing more than to play RL but they are usually not physically or mentally strong enough to put their body through the rigours. Hence it is definitely fair to put them all in the one bunch as RL is an elite code which requires elite commitment of body and mind. It will not have massive participation numbers for this very reason.
