So it's unfair to have a go at NRL membership numbers compared to AFL. That will hopefully change once the NRL clubs realise once and for all that memberships are essential to their need to improve their balance sheets, and then as a follow on their fans realise the same thing. I have my membership - both at Belmore and at Whitten. Let the NRL change the culture first, then we can make comparisons on that score.
Cracker they can't say on the one hand their not important and then in the other it's unfair to refer to them as the NRL doesn't have a membership culture. They don't have the culture as they never worked on getting people to the game - it was more important to build a leagues club and fill it with pokies - and that's what people tend to forget that's where their priority lay over 30 years ago!
Yes that was indeed 30 years ago, at a time when poker machines were only legal in one state. New South Wales. That changed a long time ago and the clubs have had plenty of time to adjust their priorities. The time is ripe to do so, especially in Sydney. The NRL was embarassed by the A-League this past weekend and that should be a wake up call to clubs to get off their collective bottoms and recognise the need for crowd numbers and memberships. The NRL should be leading the charge on this, especially with the AFL commencing competition earlier than usual this year. I don't expect the Battle of the Bridge to pull as many people as the United/Wanderers derby, but if it beats the Bunnies/Roosters crowd there should be some fists beating on tables at Rugby League Headquarters.
- I think they have gone with the attitude they would rather have a full stadium at spotless .
