how far the VFL has come eh
3 contrived manipulated salary cap & draft privilege assisted premierships in a row 10 years ago
how we doin since then![]()
29K average crowds & membership in 2010
20K average crowds & membership in 2013
they've lost something in the vicinity of 12 Million dollars in the last 5 years & have been bailed out several times by the VFL in that time & in reality they'd of folded if it weren't for hand outs
they've had to move their training facility to the boon docks at Ipswich 80k's to the west of Brisbane as they couldn't afford to stay at the gabba their that skint for coin ..they can barely pay their power bill![]()

Love those gabba seats, funny how they insisted on having heaps of different colours in there to make the ground look full each time.Xman wrote:That applies to every team. the venue has never had the fullhouse sign up since the fumbles & bumbles infested it in the late 90's

Union filled it in 2001 for the Lions tour 42,000
Soccer filled it for the Sydney Olympics in 2000... 42,000
& Cricket has filled it numerous times 39,000 being capacity for cricket.
RL has never been played there but would of course hold all records for attendances there .. if it had
like it does at every other main sports venue in Brisbane![]()

The Gabba hosted several Football matches during the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games including the quarter-final between Brazil and Cameroon in front of 37,332 fans. Rugby League holds the attendance record at the venue with 47,096 people attending a 1954 Test Match between Australia and Great Britain. The highest cricket crowd is 39,874 for a one day international between Australia and South Africa in 2006 while the highest AFL crowd is 37,224 in 2005 for a match between Brisbane Lions and Collingwood.

NRL in Brisbane every week from that year
looks like the Kitty kats are gunna go from 4th .... to 5th most popular team & I'd say the roar will have passed them by then so it'll in fact be 6th most popular
VFL
irrelevant in Bris vegas
Who cares if the lions are the 3rd or 4th team for popularity in an expansion market? Their crowds still put most NRL clubs to shame
I highly doubt it. Why would almost half their members come from a state where they play few home games? Why is their average home crowd well above their local membership total when all other teams have similar or lower crowd averages in comparison?AFLcrap1 wrote:Xman I read it about 18 months ago on Big Footy..

Looks shithouse too.
Been played in QLD longer than RL, when does it finally stop being called an expansion market?Phelpsy wrote:AFL crap... You have to remember that it is an expansion market for AFL. They have a niche market in Brisbane, are reported in the paper, in the media, and get decent crowds. That's surely a good thing for AFL. No one expects them to be the number 1 code. But they have made a mark and that's a good thing. Compare that to nrl in non heartland states

I can't see them having more than 5k members in Vic.ParraEelsNRL wrote:Xman wrote:I highly doubt it. Why would almost half their members come from a state where they play few home games? They are a merged team, of course they have members from Victoria just like the Swans do in Sydney, they have a few k members still from Victoria that followed the team when they were south melbourne.
Why deny it, everyone knows the history.
It's the swans. The lions were a struggling VFL side with a tiny following, hence they were forced to merge or fold.AFLcrap1 wrote:That's possible ,it could have been the Swans..
One of them has 10K Victorian members..
in 1954, the gabba was a totally different venue back then. was all standing room and had a grey hound racing track around it. that record will never be broken, because the whole venue has been redesigned, seating every where & the old gabba even had a dog track around it,ParraEelsNRL wrote:Actually, RL holds the record for the biggest ever crowd at the gabba.Raiderdave wrote:yeah ...looks like its ova 30,000.AFLcrap1 wrote:Looks like Cricket has easily done what derpball has failed to do .
