5 thousand short of capacity in a town where rl dominates is pretty good surely. The fact we are even comparing AFL crowds with nrl crowds in nrl heartland shows how far AFL has come . Massive back fire for this post.

29K average crowds & membership in 2010
20K average crowds & membership in 2013

they've lost something in the vicinity of 12 Million dollars in the last 5 years & have been bailed out several times by the VFL in that time & in reality they'd of folded if it weren't for hand outs
they've had to move their training facility to the boon docks at Ipswich 80k's to the west of Brisbane as they couldn't afford to stay at the gabba their that skint for coin ..they can barely pay their power bill
but yeah

In the same time the broncos crowds have dropped from 35k to 30k. At least the lions have a decent reason, a new AFL team began only an hour away, plus they've been cellar dwellers for long enough to impact crowds.

That is have a packed Gabba for a game.(Lions have never had a full house..not even close)

Who cares if the lions are the 3rd or 4th team for popularity in an expansion market? Their crowds still put most NRL clubs to shame

I highly doubt it. Why would almost half their members come from a state where they play few home games? Why is their average home crowd well above their local membership total when all other teams have similar or lower crowd averages in comparison?

AFL crap... You have to remember that it is an expansion market for AFL. They have a niche market in Brisbane, are reported in the paper, in the media, and get decent crowds. That's surely a good thing for AFL. No one expects them to be the number 1 code. But they have made a mark and that's a good thing. Compare that to nrl in non heartland states

Just what I was going to say, Xman, because it was about 5K members that Fitzroy had when they merged. And many supporters didn't follow the merged franchise because they saw it as a takeover so you can bring the Melbourne numbers down even more than that!

Actually, RL holds the record for the biggest ever crowd at the gabba.

Edit, just seen that it was posted above.

in 1954, the gabba was a totally different venue back then. was all standing room and had a grey hound racing track around it. that record will never be broken, because the whole venue has been redesigned, seating every where & the old gabba even had a dog track around it,
