The Rebels have the ARU for support and a backer that is taking a step back from the club, future for the rebels look bleak imo.
The Australian Rugby Union has recorded another large deficit but predicts a welcome surplus in 2013 thanks to the blockbuster British and Irish Lions tour.

The ARU on Monday announced a net deficit of $8.3 million – a $2.3 million improvement on 2011 – at their first annual general meeting under a newly-adopted constitution.
Now that is nearly 20m loss in 2 years and they(aru) are reliant on the Lions tour (once every 12 years) to bring the books back in order.

MELBOURNE Rebels chairman and chief financial backer Harold Mitchell intends to step down before the end of the year. But he won't take his cash with him.

Media buyer Mitchell helped bring the Rebels to Melbourne in 2009.

Increasing business commitments have seen him spend less time involved with the Rebels.

Mitchell will remain the Rebels' major financial backer and have a representative sit on the club board.
He will remain the clubs backer but for how long is the question....... :-k :-k :-k

Storm doing more then good in my books, just look at the Away teams ave.............. =D> =D>
You're suggesting their level of support can be indicated by their games interstate? Surely your not that dumb!
No i am saying that their level of support at home outstrips the rebels and there away crowd ave is the largest in the NRL.

Make of the away ave what you will, but the storm are leaps and bounds ahead of the rebels and have the ARLC/New ltd as backers. The rebels do not have this type of support.
Do you think their away crowds have to do with the fact they are top and therefore there games are more important matches?

The future for the Storm looks bleak once News sell them off and they don't make the finals. Watch their crowds and little interest drop off.

best sporting team in Australia .. bar none .. in any code & have been since 2006
News will sell them when they find a buyer who will support them as well as they have

looks like the Storm will continue to dominate for many years to come
& its finally starting to resinate with Melbournians

very respectable TV numbers
& growing crowds ... 18K average so far in 2013 .. nearly 50% up on this time last year

no **********
its all up up up for the Storm from here =D> =D> =D>

That's pretty good 18000 average at home. I think the storm are more ingrained then the rebels. I think if you asked most Victorians they would know who the storm are.. If you asked who is your union team most wouldn't. But in fairness , give the rebels some time .

Best sporting club in the country who lose millions a year, have less members than every AFL club bar 3, and average smaller crowds than every AFL club bar 2

Yes i think that would play a part in it and also the fact that they have the Big 3 in Cronk, Slater, Smith which most RL fans enjoy watching. Those 3 players are all class and even being a NSW blues man you cant help but admire how good these three are.

I just checked that, I had no idea they were averaging 18k I thought more around the 15k, still it's only 4 games in and more worryingly in my selfish opinion, 2k more than my horrible excuse for a team (although last years wooden spoon is looking an achievement atm) that's equal last again this season and looks to be battling out for the spoon for the 3rd year in a row.

Union out here in aus gets around $20 million a year in TV rights, $100 million over 5 years. It can not compete.

More free ticket giveaways for the next Storm home game. Kids get in free if they're with an adult.

Why not.

If it fills the stadium and the kids want to keep coming back, that's good right?

Agreed. Unless you're GWS or GC, in which case it's fudgey wudgey desperation acording to some.
