ONLY one thing scares the AFL more than illegal drugs - actually catching someone who uses them.

When it comes to huffing and puffing, on quiet days when nothing is being put to the test, few do it better than AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou.

The league boss stood boldly in front of the Australian flag at a February 7 press conference that informed the public their sporting world was awash with match-fixing and drug taking.

Terror and utter confusion reigned on "our darkest day".

That was just the start.

Demetriou later held his own press conference announcing he would upgrade and expand the AFL's integrity checks, leaving fans convinced any player who digested so much as a stray Panadol would hang from the nearest light pole.

Then, two days ago, something telling happened. The AFL's hot air balloon of high morals crashed into a cliff face called the real world. =D> =D>

The Courier-Mail ran a story quoting Ash McGrath's cousin Jason saying six Brisbane Lions players had taken drugs and - gulp - the system was actually put to the test.

It took only a day for the Bengal tiger roar of February 7 to turn to a tabby cat purr. The Brisbane Lions have said they will not investigate and the AFL has now gone the same way, despite quietly referring the story to its integrity unit.

The AFL says it sees a distinction between approving an investigation and referring a matter to its integrity unit. Not sure how there should be a distinction ...

The Lions said they had "no reason to believe the word of a self-confessed drug dealer".

The key flaw in this argument is that his claims have been supported to The Courier-Mail by two former Lions staff members, who may have spoken to AFL investigators had they been asked. The AFL does not appear to be interested on the basis of a statement made yesterday.

It does not want to know.

The AFL's integrity unit has said it lacks hard evidence.

Hard evidence is what you need for a conviction.

An allegation is all you need for an investigation, and there are three of those already.

Hard evidence is something you get by asking questions, by picking up a phone, by peeping into dark corners.

The woeful inaction of the Lions and the AFL is a candid statement about the gap between rhetoric and reality on this issue. Sweep sweeep under the carpet boys...

The AFL's lack of endeavour is no major shock because, of all the football codes, it has been Australian sport's chain-dragger in the war against drugs. =D> =D>

The Federal Government almost had to put the AFL in a headlock to sign the WADA drugs code in 2005, and it has also introduced a much-derided three-strikes policy for illegal drugs in which only an idiot can get caught.

That's if anyone can be bothered catching them.

it was about 800K over the legal cap
& it would be likey it was paid to the " big 4" ...... Inglis , Slater , Smith & Cronk

lets assume they were on 500K legally back in 2009
so 700K all up each

now
Inglis left .... so almost all of that 800K over went with him
the Storm also shed about 4 other " fringe " players

meaning Striker .. it is quite feasible to say the " big 3" , Smith Cronk & Slater are now legally on the same money they were on .. albeit Illegally .. in 2009
with the 1 Million cap increase for 2013 ... they could be on more then this

but lets be clear .. they are worth every cent

Patrick smith is primarily an AFL commentator. Caroline Wilson is about as critical of the AFL as anyone. Se rarely writes a positive column. Robo is also critical.
