Hawthorn recruit Brian Lake escapes punishment from club following drunken incident with wife

Hawthorn's new recruit Brian Lake has escaped serious punishment from the AFL club for his drunken weekend escapade which landed him and his wife in police custody.

Lake, the club's high-profile off-season capture from Western Bulldogs, was locked up on the Mornington Peninsula for being drunk in a public place.

He and wife Shannon spent several hours in custody on Saturday night, and were each fined $563 over the incident.

Lake apologised to his new teammates on Monday, and will now be made to participate in the Hawks' police-in-schools community program.

But he won't face any further sanction from the club.

"I'd like to apologise to everyone involved at the Hawthorn football club - supporters, players and coaches, for my behaviour on the weekend," Lake said in a statement.

"I've been at this club now for three months and I've put my best foot forward in terms of my training and rehabilitation from injury, and I've worked hard to gain the respect of the players and coaches and everyone at the football club, and I see this as a reasonable step back.

"But what I'm looking forward to now is getting back to what I was doing in those previous three months and gaining the respect again from the players and everyone at the football club."

Hawks head of coaching Chris Fagan said the club was disappointed in Lake's conduct.

"We don't expect our players to be in situations like that. We expect this to be a once-off with Brian and we think he's learnt his lesson," Fagan said.

What punishment did this slagger get Raiderdave?

MANLY Sea Eagles winger Jorge Taufua has been charged with assault for allegedly spitting at a police officer on the Gold Coast overnight.

It's alleged the 20-year-old rookie player was arrested at 3.35am outside Shooters nightclub in Surfers Paradise.

He faced the Southport Magistrates Court this morning with his head and right eye heavily bandaged and his hands cuffed in front of him.

Taufua had been staying at Crowne Plaza in Surfers Paradise with friends before the alleged incident this morning.

Police did not oppose bail but asked for a disease test to be carried out. Aids test

Magistrate John Costanzo granted bail but banned him from attending any licensed premises in Queensland.

He will also have to report to the Mt Druitt Police Station.

The duty lawyer said Taufua has no criminal history.

The case was adjourned to January 10 for case conferencing.

Taufua debuted as Manly's left winger this year replacing long time speedster Michael Robertson.

"alleged" means squat when it's an AFL player that's "allegedly" been caught in the wrong and you guys make a big fuss about it, so the same rule applies here. Can't have it both ways dick head.

AFL star charged for drink-driving after blowing five times the limit

AFL star Liam Jurrah charged for drink-driving after blowing five times the limit at Para Hills
BY: BRYAN LITTLELEY From: The Advertiser January 16, 2013 11:00PM

Liam Jurrah, the former Melbourne Demons star, has been charged with drink-driving. Source: Herald Sun
TROUBLED football star Liam Jurrah has been charged with drink-driving after the P-plater blew a staggering 0.27 when he arrived at a house where police were in attendance on Monday.

The former Melbourne star, who faces aggravated assault charges that will be decided in the Northern Territory in March, reportedly arrived at Para Hills in Adelaide's north where police were dealing with another matter.

Officers from Golden Grove police reported Jurrah, 24, after they'd stopped him in his Holden Commodore about 8.20pm on Monday.

Jurrah, who is living in Elizabeth, was detained after he appeared affected by alcohol.

He was then breath-tested and returning a reading of .269 - more than five times the legal limit of .05.

He was reported for driving under the influence of alcohol, exceeding the prescribed level of alcohol and breaching a probationary licence.

His driver's licence has been disqualified for 12 months and he will be summonsed to appear in the Holden Hill Magistrates Court at a date still to be decided.

Port Adelaide Football Club general manager (SANFL) Brian Leys last night said Jurrah had not trained with the club since being made an offer to join its ranks after Port Power failed to take him.

Mr Leys said he had only heard reports of the drink- driving charge through the media. He added: "The offer is still open ... we'd love him to come down."

Jurrah's grandmother, Cecily Granites, told The Advertiser last night that the drink-driving matter was an issue for Jurrah and his family to sort out among themselves.

"It's between Liam and his family ... no one else's business," she said.

"We're sorting it out as a family. He's OK."

Jurrah has in recent months been known to frequent Adelaide's south parklands to visit family members.

The footballer has also attended the Hutt Street Centre for homeless people on a number of occasions.

A family member said that Jurrah had often taken food to homeless people during his visits there.

Most of those living in the parklands with whom Jurrah had contact have been moved on after the bashing murder of a 41-year-old homeless man in December.

A man, 29, of no fixed address, has been charged with the murder.
