Plenty more kids took notice of the Giants because they saw them mentioned in the news or saw them in the papers. If thats the case are you conceeding kids quit RL to follow RU when a player does the same?

Tippet for Folau. That would be fantastic for GWS.

P.S. Xman, if dogey dave says anything intelligible tell me, because I've given up on his cryptic garbage.

All that I got from his post is that he has kids. I think someone should call child protective services.

Isreal Folau, pictured with GWS coach Kevin Sheedy, has retired from the AFL. Picture: Fairfax Photographic
FEW would have been surprised with this week’s announcement from Israel Folau that AFL wasn’t his cup of tea and he was packing his millions and heading back to a sport he can play – rugby league.

See your ad here
The “experiment” of Greater Western Sydney (GWS) Giants to firstly lure the league star and then to actually play him on the biggest sporting stage in the nation was a bold one – and one most NRL fans would be happy to see finished.

Well, somehow I get the feeling both the Giants and the AFL might also be pretty relieved at the exercise has come to an end and in doing so, free up some significant salary cap space for someone who can play the game.

And unlike those who couldn’t wait for it to fail, I dare say the boffins at the Giants and more broadly the AFL executive would be marking the Folau file with a giant stamp “Mission Accomplished”.

While Gold Coast Sun Karmichael Hunt is likely to make the transition from rugby league to Aussie rules as a player, Folau had struggled from day one.

Dare I say it, probably the best game he played was in Wagga when he dominated up forward against a Canberra team in the club’s inaugural season in the ACTFL.

So I guess we can at least count ourselves lucky in having seen Izzy at his best.

But back to my original point, I reckon the Folau project, at least as far as the AFL is concerned, wasn’t about his on-field success, but the off-field profile of the club. And they have certainly built that.

Forget the losses, having Folau as the lead act in this Broadway production and coach Kevin Sheedy in the supporting role, the AFL has received untold publicity in western Sydney – publicity that has given the club a platform on which to build in what is a traditional NRL community.

It would be difficult to estimate the value of that publicity in dollars – but it would be well into the millions and more than compensate for the pay packet Folau has received from either the AFL or the Giants.

At the end of the day, the shrewd move from the AFL to sign up players like Hunt and Folau was always going to work – one way or another.

As far as Hunt is concerned – it’s working on two fronts.

His fledgling club has received significant publicity in Queensland – a state that has traditional ties to rugby league.

The upside for the Gold Coast is that Hunt is developing into a useful player as well – a real win-win for the Suns.

With Folau, the on-field prowess didn’t match up to the hype, but the publicity – even when he couldn’t get a touch – was priceless.

Sure, some of it was a little negative, but if you follow the maxim that any publicity is good publicity, Israel has more than repaid the club.

The Giants have been able to build a profile, build a membership and build a team of talented youngsters that will be a competitive outfit in the not too distant future.

NRL fans might be rubbing their hands with glee, but I get the feeling it’s the AFL that is having the last laugh on the Folau folly.

Well wehell wehell well well! :\: =D> :\:

I've been gone for a while and come back to this!

Xman in his finest form (or worst form depending on how you look at it) - copping an absolute shalacking but steadfastly sticking to his pink waterpistols which squirt sideways shooting at RD and the League crew while they casually bitch slap him to the ground.

Throw down your weapons Xman! You got no hope in this one, even with cos's pissant contributions

Personally though, I'm not sure if this is a good thing for Parra. Unfortunately the unethical AFL organisation has taken a star in his prime, immorally lured this young man/star with wads and wads of cash, and in the end possibly broken the poor bastard. Apparently he's dropped 20kg of pure muscle...a mere skeleton of the man he used to be. Additionally this sojourn into professional marngrook may have knocked the man about mentally also.

In my view the AFL and their 'experiment' definitely has made them look a disgrace, but their greed and immorality may have ruined a promising career... [-X only time will tell [-o< What a disgraceful organisation [-X

Yes, we had the household name for a year.
Now we're boosting playing stocks.
The media will inform the public of his prowess.
You are quite pathetic with absolutely no logic dave.
Where would you be without your childish emoticons???

Yeah E
Parra don't need outside backs as much as they need ... a 1st class dummy half firstly & some halves also that are firing , behind a forward pack eating up the metres
if they can get this .... they will have a very potent backline ..... Hayne , Hopoate & Falou
lots of points in their 3/4 's

a title for the eels I feel in the next few seasons , if Sticky can get a bit more out of the support act for that 3/4 line....

Youre entitled to your opinion. Doesnt make it right though. The article I posted is spot on. He was recruited for a short term role and his employment fulfilled most of the intended aims. His departure was inevitable and will work out perfect for the AFL.

The AFL would wave goodbye to Izzy with a little grin Id suggest.

People don't go to Giants games to see Israel play, they go to see a young, promising, exciting and probable future championship winning team play. The only effect that Israel leaving will have, is a few less league bogans tuning in to watch him play shit football. Oh and also the teams performance will improve a lot without that spud fucking up their structures.

Too right. He created initial interest to see how he'd fair. Once they realised he couldnt play if anything he would have kept fans away. Put Kirt Tippett in there and you have some interest, maybe not from RL fans, but we all know Sydney isnt full of RL fans!
