AFL Dominates Pay TV Ratings

Just came across the following over at Big Footy posted by Prince Imperial. Very impressive figures indeed for Fox Footy, in particular Brisbane. =D> =D> =D>

Once again Fox Footy is easily the best rating subscription channel for the week 22/4 to 22/8. It secured 3.6% of subscription viewers placing it well ahead of Fox 8 and Fox Sports 2 both at 2.3%.

There are also some interesting figures available for total channel share in each of the 5 city metro markets. The total metropolitan viewing for all TV channels (including those who don't have pay) shows that nationally Fox Footy had 1.6% of all viewing. The city figures were Sydney (0.5), Melbourne (2.6), Brisbane (1.3), Adelaide (1.9) and Perth (2.2) . Very good result for Brisbane I would think especially given the onfield weakness of the Lions and Suns.

Fox footy rated higher than the NRL on fox 2 on SAturday and Sunday because it was on 2 channels. Both together rated much higher than the NRL.

The AFL is dominating payTV and FTA this year.

With saturday night for example the AFL had 2 games shown on 4 different channels

The AFL games on fox rated about 330K and the game on FTA rated about 600K metro. This outrated the NRL in a big way. It would be interesting to see how the NRL would rate with simulcasting and 2 games on at the same time. Lucky for the spectators of AFL they didn't sell out to TV and they have most of their games on at times when people want to go to them. 5 games on Saturday, which makes them more family friendly then the NRL. It would be good to see the NRL say stuff u TV we will not play games on Monday night every week so that the real supporters can go to the games and we will not have a 6 week rolling fixture so that people can prebook their holidays and fly or drive to games out of state. But this will not happen even though in my opinion it would be better in the long term.

Fox footy continues to be the number one foxte channel.

Ratings are massive when games shown at the same time are combined, especially given they are up against a FTA game.

Foxfooty channel is a waste and the NRL should not chase this.

RL dont have 6 week fixtures. Its more like 10-10 and 6 weeks leading into the semi's. Its only common sense - and fair to supporters. that you want teams in semifinal contention shown on FTA. Ten weeks is plenty of time to plan a trip.

The sides that are going to be successful, and those that are not going to be successful dont stand out like a saw thumb in our competition - Its not painfully apparant in our comp who the winners will be after six or seven rounds. We Dont schedule blockbusters for the opening few weeks - we have a competition that is even all season round.

Why wouldn't you want your best matches on FTA. Surely it in everybody best intrest - Fan, League and TV.

Because its an ongoing cycle. The better teams get better exposure due to FTA coverage, so they get better sponsorship opportunities and more fans. The NRl show the broncos almost constantly on FTA yet some of the smaller weaker clubs barely get shown at all. This perpetuates the issue.
