Well for a start, you said the last five years. This site only shows the last four. Secondly I do not see this pattern you're alluding to. If anything, I see the AFL continues to dominate the NRL week to week in the nationwide audience stakes.
its a constant 6% drop a year ... so 2011's figures will be 24% lower then 2007 , & 30% lower then 2006

Just found the following official report regarding tv audiences and am starting to think the regionals for the AFL must be huge with an average of 4.16 million viewers each round. It's a shame that is only part of the picture because as we know many parts of AFL heartland are not counted in the regional tv ratings.
Audiences
The 2010 Toyota AFL Grand Final was again the highest-rating sports
program for the year and second highest-rating program for the year
after the fi nal of MasterChef. It was watched by an average national
audience of 3.6 million people on the Seven Network. The Grand Final
Replay was watched by an average 3.5 million people to be the second
most-watched sporting event in Australia in 2010.
Other highlights of the 2010 season included:
» An average audience per round for the Toyota AFL
Premiership Season of 4.16 million viewers.
» The total gross audience for week one of the Toyota AFL
Finals Series was more than 5.15 million viewers.
» Network Ten’s telecast of the 2010 Brownlow Medal count
attracted more than 1.1 million viewers nationally,
an increase of more than eight per cent on 2009.
» Fox Sports’ telecast of the 2010 Four’N Twenty All-
Australian Awards attracted an average 113,767 viewers
nationally, up 16 per cent on 2009.
The top five rating matches for the 2010 Toyota AFL Premiership
Season were as follows:
» Round nine, Collingwood v Geelong Cats, 1.33 million
viewers across metropolitan and regional free-to-air (FTA).
» Round two, Brisbane Lions v Carlton, 1.22 million viewers
across metropolitan and regional FTA.
» Round fi ve, Collingwood v Essendon (Anzac Day),
1.18 million viewers across metropolitan and regional FTA.
» Round eight, Fremantle v Collingwood, 1.14 million viewers
across metropolitan and regional FTA.
» Round three, St Kilda v Collingwood, 1.12 million

so for 4 games you get 4.16 million.......

we get nearly that for 3
& don't start with we're not all counted cr@p
theres no regional audience of any note in the AFL areas to count
they're all included in their metro figures
IE .. the catchment for Perth is nearly 2 million people strong
theres only about 2.2 Million people in all of WA
pull the other one , it plays jingle bells
& gee
the first origin game in 2010 drew an Audience of 3.588 million
last time I looked
thats more then 3.5 million
when will the AFL stop telling lies & actually put something up that is accuarte .. & factual

When you factor in the regionals, which AFL supporters don't like to acknowledge the NRL is certainly not dominated. Add Test & Origin and theres no longer a difference.
But you overlook the most significant factor - The NRL has 3 matches on FTA TV while the AFL have more than double with 7.
On Foxtel we have a slight advange by having
one extra match but we absolutely smash you in the PAY TV ratings. 75 of the top 100 programs.
