Hawthorn's Lance Franklin trains in front of thousands of fans before the Grand Final

HAWTHORN has further cemented itself as an AFL power club by posting a profit of more than $1 million, although its gaming venture in Caroline Springs continues to experience growing pains.

Boosted by record membership and increases in corporate and sponsorship revenue, the Hawks made $1.29 million in 2012.

It was the club's 16th consecutive profit.

That was despite the Hawthorn-owned West Waters entertainment complex posting a loss of around $840,000.

The complex also lost approximately $1million last year, its first year of operation, after opening late due to construction delays.

In a statement, Hawthorn said West Waters was still in an "establishment phase".

It is projected to return a healthy profit in 2013.

"The club is pleased there has been some significant improvement in the venue's financial performance over recent months and believes the business is very well positioned to deliver on its strong financial forecasts," the statement said.

President Andrew Newbold said the Hawks' huge 'net operating profit' of just over $2 million (the tally without including non-football-related assets such as West Waters) was a credit to the club's management and staff.

He also thanked members for their contribution.

Hawthorn had 60,841 members in 2012 (including a record 8,731 in Tasmania), an increase of 7.4 per cent on 2011.

"The challenge now is to keep improving and growing in the area of membership, and so I encourage all members to renew their support and help the club secure 65,000 members in 2013," Newbold said.

"Although we didn’t achieve the ultimate success we were striving for in 2012, we have accomplished a very satisfying financial result and will continue to work hard to go one better in all facets of the business in 2013."

Hawthorn will release a new strategic plan late this year, after September's Grand Final loss meant the club fell just short of achieving the two key planks of its 'five2fifty' (five years, two premierships, 50,000 members) plan, which ran from 2008-2012.

The club has over $23 million in assets, and the Hawthorn Football Club Foundation has built a bank of more than $2.8 million.
The Hawks are the first AFL club to release financial results this year.
Seven clubs posted operating losses in 2011, and a similar outcome can be expected as 2012 results are made public in the lead-up to Christmas.
